Subject: OWS?

I have been living in AK for 7 months now and recently did our town’s annual triathlon and loved all the training leading up to the event.  This was my first triathlon and I certainly do not want it to be the last as it was really fun and I liked the competition.

The town has a pool, so I did my entire swim training there but if I ever wanted to venture out of the state to do a triathlon elsewhere I figure an open water swim is likely.  Even with a heavy wetsuit in the middle of summer, the Bering Sea is just too cold to even think about going into.

How do other Alaskans practice OWS?

Thanks…

I personally go down to the lower 48 and do it there. So if the Air Force isn't sending me anywhere and I don't have any leave planned, I don't bother doing OWS training haha.

Agreed, I do all my training in a pool. I'd rather not deal with OWS here, lol. Plus, I am too afraid of sea lions. Angry beasts.

The tri club here in Anchorage swim in lakes with our wet suits.

Thanks for the information.  I will have to investigate any small lakes/ocean inlets we have here next summer to see if it is possible to swim in.  Like Hercgirl said above, I too am a little scarred of “nature” sneaking up on me in the water, but I guess that is part of the normal OWS fears.

Now I will just have to plan my lower 48 vacations around nice places to take a swim.

Thanks again!!!
