Swim
Comments: if this had been my first open water swim, i probably would have never done another tri. lots and lots of pushing, getting my head shoved underwater, etc. i think the course was too narrow for the number of women that were in my wave. i didn't have clean water for the length of the course. had a lot of trouble with navigation because we were swimming directly into the sun for the last third and i just couldn't see. had to stop and tread water a few times to get my bearings. What would you do differently?: i felt fine as far as my fitness level, but i had a lot of trouble with environmental factors such as the sun. all the bumping and pushing was new for me, as well. need to invest in tinted goggles, and have my husband try to drown me repeatedly in the pool while i swim Transition 1
Comments: did okay getting my wetsuit off and into my bike stuff What would you do differently?: learn how to do the thing where my shoes are attached to my pedals Bike
Comments: very flat course but nice and open, due to the closed roads. had headwinds on the first and last thirds of the ride that gave me some difficulty. winds were strong enough that i didn't eat or drink as much as i should have because i was hesitant to take a hand off the bike. spent more time in aerobars than i ever have before What would you do differently?: didn't spend enough time on the bike prior to the race. too many spin classes and not enough actual time on the road. need to work on biking "harder" as well to increase speed and endurance Transition 2
Comments: took a long time in transition trying to get my legs back under me. had some water and ate a clif block. things i should have done while moving, but i needed an extra minute to gather myself for the run What would you do differently?: fueled more on the bike so that i felt better in transition; learn how to take off shoes while still on the bike Run
Comments: while i didn't set any land speed records, i was actually pretty happy with the run. i was able to get my nutrition back on track by taking in some gatorade at half the aid stations and water and/or water and a clif block at other aid stations. my pace was consistent throughout, albeit slow. had a lot of tightness in my right calf for the first mile and a half, which has been a problem during training as well. What would you do differently?: need to get faster, but that will come with time. Post race
Warm down: walked around a little. had some pizza and a banana What limited your ability to perform faster: still working on base fitness. my times were all essentially on the money for what i expected them to be though, and i was okay with that. Last updated: 2011-09-08 12:00 AM

picked up my packet, ate a "banana burrito" (flax seed flat bread with a banana and justin's nut butter with honey), and drank some water. the swim waves were delayed 15 minutes so had some extra time to walk around and check things out. bought a new wetsuit because i had neglected to rent one and the water was cold. got it for 40% off and needed to get one eventually anyway, so i was okay with that
not much - swam back and forth a little before my wave started
