Hi there,
I'll be visiting downtown Omaha in a couple weeks for a wedding. I have to get in a long run (18-20 miles). Where is the safest place to run? I'm okay with multiple loops.

Thanks!

There are lots of safe places. If you are downtown it is pretty hilly. I'd suggest going to one of the trains systems. You can get right on the trailhead by our top running shoe store called Peak Performance. Their 78th and Cass location is right along a trail. Has places along the trail where there is water or convenience stores just off the trail.

Otherwise, try Zorinsky Lake or Chalco Hills. Both are public access man made lake areas with a trail around them. Water and rest rooms available as well.

spuphal, I've been in omaha quite a few times over the past three months now. For ease of use, access, and safety I would definitely recommend the Keystone trail. You only have to worry about 8-10 miles one way to complete your total loop distance so you could hop on the "trail" pretty much anywheresince it runs like 30 miles one way.The trail runs North and South for the most part so there's no getting lost.I've biked it and ran it a few times and it gets wide open the further South you go.It's a paved trail with no street crossing due to the trail built with underpasses so you're good there to. Be advised that there's no water fountains on the path so you'll need your water. Or you can do shorter loops to pass by your car or water stash.PM me for further questions, or wait out the post as I'm sure the locals will have their ownSuggestions.-Eddie

As the others have said the Keystone trail is probably your best bet closest to down town.  However, if you have a car I'd recommend driving out to Lake Zorinski.  it has two loops (small lake 3.1 Miles, big lake 4.3 miles) and the big lake has four restrooms with clean water fountains.

Enjoy your visit.
