Pre-race routine:

Our pre-race routine consisted of going to bed at 1am after doing a corn maze and trail of terror. Got up and left the house by 3am. We stopped at a Starbucks and I ate a couple slices of cakes. We arrived at the race site about an hour before start time but since we were registering that day, it'd be over an hour after that before Shelly got in the pool.
Event warmup:

I didn't really warmup at all.
Swim

  • 250 yards

Comments:

I watched her swim and took a few pictures. After she got out, I ran through the building to the TA while she ran around it. Threw my [running] shoes off and my sweat pants as she came to the bike.
Transition 1
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

I've never done a relay and know there's some grey area as to what's allowed and what isn't. (Some had their helmets on and their bike unracked when their running came in).
I wanted to do it right so waited until she got there before I touched my bike and helmet.
Had to run around one person as I jumped on the bike but it went pretty smoothly.
Bike
  • 29m 3s
  • 10 miles
  • 20.65 mile/hr
Comments:

This is the first time I didn't really know what I was getting into. Shelly told me their was two good hills on the course but hey, I'm a savageman! How bad could it be?
It was definitely harder than I expected but nothing I couldn't handle. I stayed in the aerobars for about 95% of the course. Only came out for a few of the tougher hills and sharpest corners. It was alot of fun but I think I could've gone a little faster if we started earlier. The only people on the course at this point were mountain bikers.
I stripped the bike of everything I didn't need and topped off my water bottle before the race. I was in a good rhythm and didn't want to break that up so didn't drink anything.
What would you do differently?:

Drive the course; even if it's 'just a sprint'
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

The ride in went pretty smoothly. Again, I wanted to rack the bike before handing off the chip.
I un-velcrosed the wrong end first and had to put the chip back in before doing it right and putting it on Shelly's leg.
What would you do differently?:

Practice something you're not familiar with.
Run
  • 24m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

I actually hurt pretty bad after the bike. I sat down for a few minutes before walking down the run portion. Found a nice tree to sit under where I could see Shelly coming down a hill.
Took a few pictures and then ran the last bit with her. Ducked out before the finish chute.
Post race
Warm down:

I got some gatorade and pastries while we sat around for a while. We checked the time posting and we made 2nd place! Couldn't believe it.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No sleep, little training for the course, not eating right the 24hrs leading up to the race.
So proud of my girl!
