I am looking at doing this race. Can anyone in the area or that raced near Ocala tell me anything about the course? I have heard that Ocala has lots of rolling hills.

Thanks,

Bubba

They have some rolling hills. The swim takes place at a real nice county park Canary Island which is in the middle of no where.  The course is some rollers but not anything significant.  The countyside around the start is very rural roads and should be a very nice bike course.  I have not ridden the course but was going to next Wednesday.  I have an event planned at that park where the swim will take place.  Will let you know what I find.  I have done several rides in and around Ocala and most are as I described above.

FWIW, water temperature in Lake Weir is expected to be 59-64 degrees for the race(s) in March.

I am doing this race, so I guess it's time to get a wetsuit

wait a little - there will be seasonal sales all over in the next few months...   stores need some of that $ that would otherwise go to Toys R Us.

This I have planned as my 2012 season opener.  I talked about this with my neighbor and as we live outside of G'ville it is a no-brainer (we don't have many races this close to home).

A bunch of members of the new FISHHAWK TRIATHLON CLUB will be doing this race as season opener as well.  I'm personally doing the OLY but THE CLUB will be starting a training group that will culminate with HITS Ocala.  Everyone from the true BT (aka inexperienced) to the Long Distance triathlete is welcome to join, and should be able to complete if the training is followed.

We call it, the Newbie Triathlete Training Series (NTTS)!

This is a new club. We train mostly in Lithia, FL (just S of Plant City and Valrico) aka SE of Brandon.  Our focus is to support the athlete and grow the sport while having fun. Cool

If anyone's interested in learning more about our club, pls visit our website for more info.  We also use facebook for posting most group training sessions.

http://www.fishhawktriclub.com/index.html  There are two pages on facebook, an open one, and a closed group for active club members where all the group trainings get posted.

I am the club's VP  Wink

So, how did your activity go?  I hope all went well.

Can you now tell us more about the area?  Thx in advance.

Our Saturday bike ride group from Santos Bike Shop did a sprint practice at the Ocala site last month.  We did a short swim which gave me a chance to tryout my wetsuit before TRIKW.  We rode the sprint course.  As described in the earlier post, it is pretty flat with slightly rolling hills.  The run was inside the park on a trail.  I plan to do the Olympic distance at this race in March.

Do I interpret "on a trail" as being unpaved?  What was the surface, loose dirt?  Sand, grass?

The trail is not paved.  It is generally what you find in most forest trails with a few sandy spots but mostly a good running surface being a mixture of sand/mulch/dirt.  It seems wide enough in most places as we were running three abreast during our trial run.  This was the sprint (olympic - 2 loops) run course.
