Indianhead, Maryland
United States
Set Up Events
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 4h 48m 8s
Overall Rank = 3/161
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 0/10
Pre-race routine:

Woke-up at 4:30am for the 8am start. Ate one bowl of maple buckwheat cereal with skim milk and a whey crisp, then noshed on two bananas in the hour before the race start.
Event warmup:

Quick 5 minute bike, 5 minute run, so chance to check out the water beforehand.
Swim
  • 34m 5s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt great on the swim - not quite a PR but this felt a lot easier than my slightly faster swim at JerseyMan. I felt in control the whole time - using my breathing as a mental anchor really helped. All I had to do was focus on an aggressive catch, make sure my core stayed stable, and it all just came together.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. First time I think I have been able to say that about a swim performance! All of the "feel" drills like skulling, paddles, awareness, flip, fist, etc all really helped my form come around in the last few months.
Transition 1
  • 03m 28s
Comments:

Was a little slow here - I deliberately took my time as I always do in a longer race to make sure I don't forget anything. I had no idea I would miss 2nd place by just 61 seconds! It's nice to be at the point where my transitions actually matter :)
What would you do differently?:

Hustled a little more in getting my wetsuit off!
Bike
  • 2h 33m 17s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Took down 3.5, 24oz bottle of water and 420 calories an hour on the bike and 8 salt sticks. Just right.
What would you do differently?:

Gone a liiiiittle harder if I had known how close I was!
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Good T2!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - got my belt and nutrition on just fine - the only thing I would do differently is try to find a way to keep my brew cool while it sits there in transition.
Run
  • 1h 36m 6s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Took down 500 calories total from my HEED/Carbo Pro/Green tea mix and drank at least one cup of water every aid station.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - if I had known how close I was to second I would have gone harder but I didn't know that until the final 3 miles or so. Plus fourth place came in only two minutes behind me and had a faster run split, so if I had blown up chasing #2 there is a good chance I would have gotten passed, and that would have REALLY sucked!
Post race
Warm down:

Lots and lots of food :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My weight, but that's coming along!

Event comments:

Great race, would love to do it again next year if my schedule allows.

143bpm, 90 rpm. Stayed within an average HR of 142-147 for every 5 mile segment and kept the cadence around 90 throughout - good, measured effort. Used HR alert to make sure I never went higher than 155, but I didn't ever get much higher than 150 on the flat sections. I was proud of myself for not hammering it too hard when the State Trooper told me at around mile 20 that I was in 4th place. I did well with switching from a strategic to a tactical mindset - I knew I was a strong enough runner that whatever time I lost on the bike would likely be time gained on the run and kept my patience.
