What do you folks with a big key fob (like the Prius) do with it on OWS training? (I'm ok on race day - just goes into the transition bag.) I've never liked the idea of leaving my car keys unattended, but that's usually what happens right now given the size of that thing.

where  are you training?..

When I go to the beach I leave my keys in my beach bag on the beach..doubtful someone is going to the beach looking for a car to steal anyway..maybe a bike (teenagers) but not a car. I live in suburbia btw...

At the lake I go to, I leave the key under the seat and the door unlocked..there is very little likely hood anyone is going there to steal a car..its sort of off the beaten path...

I always hide it at the base of a distinctive tree at least 200 yds from the car.

We've gone diving and hid the bf's keys in the bushes nearby. Never had a problem.

It's too bad you're male.

Anyway, you could buy a waterproof mp3 player holder and put your fob in that. they strap to your arm I think.

If you do have a Prius (I have a 2005 and 2010), what I do is remove the metal key from the key fob and leave the fob in the car. With the metal key, lock your door manually from the outside. I tie the metal key onto my swim jammers waist draw string with several loops so I won't lose it. If I am wearing a wetsuit over the jammers then it's really secure.

If I have to, I'll lock the doors and slip the keys in the gas cap door.

I always put mine on the suspension behind the front tire.  Reaching over the tire and setting it on top of the A frame behind the wheel.  I think generally if a bad guy is looking for keys around a recreation spot they check the tops of tires, gas caps and bumpers, so I have a slightly better chance of it not getting stolen.

Why not pickup a small waterproof diving bag like this one:

Not endorsing the brand it just came up first in my search.

Hopefully you don't drive a red Prius...

In all honesty it's probably best to leave the key on shore, at least 100 yds away from your car and hide it well. I usually hide my key under a rock and cover it with dirt.

They have hide-a-key containers that are magnetic you can put on the underside of your frame, that is an option.  I used to leave a permanent spare key during my forgetful youth years.

Get a mechanical key made to unlock the door and leave the huge fob in the car.  (I've done that with the key to my wife's van).

"hiding" it by a tree leaves you at risk of a well-intentioned passerby picking up the "lost" keys.

Get a realtor key lock box like these - then lock the box to your bumper

I had a skinny "open the door only" key made and carry it in one of those shoe pouches when I go for runs.  For a swim I think I would use the "hide it by a tree" method.  But I don't have that problem since there are zero places for OWS around here.  My locker at the Y sure is pretty secure though.

If your key is anything like the key for my FJ Cruiser, then you should have gotten a valet key that doesn't have the buttons. Just use this to lock your car and take the key with you on your swim.

I would advise against any method that's so obvious, like putting it in your gas cap.   Anyone casing the joint is watching for this, the same as "hiding" things in your truck.

I leave my key in my bag on the beach, the bag in plain sight.  My hope is that the general people in the area would frown upon a random person rooting through my bag out of nowhere.  I swim at a very urban beach and this works so far.

If I was organized enough to get a plain metal key made, I would carry it on myself in the water.   Just make sure it's zipped into a pocket or tied down somehow.

I really want a car with an keypad entry option...

Haven't you been doing a lot of ultra swim distances lately? Surprised

Put it inside a balloon (from a party supply store), tie a knot at the end of the balloon and put it inside your wetsuit like above the ankle area. Alternatively one could use a condom too, probably stronger than a balloon.

The problem with the 2010 Prius keyfob is that if you just leave it in the car, and someone can get access to the inside, they can just drive away with your car even if they can't find the fob, because it's programmed to start on pushbutton without a key insertion. I've tried putting it in the allegedly transmit-resistant glove compartment, but even that didn't work for me. If I leave my fob in my car, you can literally open the drivers side door just by putting your hand on it - the 'smart' Prius will happily unlock the door for you given the proximity of the fob. Doh.

I have a RAV4 fob. Not sure how it compares but it has a mechanical key built into it. Usually I take that with me to lock the car and stick it in the pocket of my tri suit. I leave the fob locked in the car.

I don't know if the Prius fob works that way though.

I have a 2010 Prius and when I place the fob in the car and lock it, it will open with the touch of my hand like they are supposed to HOWEVER, if I use the mechanical key that I detach from the key fob, leave the fob in the car and then lock the door via the mechanical key, the doors will not open when I touch door handle. Now if someone broke the window and found the fob, then the car will start.
