Subject: Are Ironman Athletes Behaving badly in Kona?

Interesting piece about the local community in Kona getting a bit tired of some of the IM athletes behaviour. After reading the comments at the bottom I can see where they're coming from. Just didn't realise it was such a problem!?

What a pointless story. A minority of triathletes run stop signs and don't thank volunteers during the race? That's a shocking surprise! Call CNN!

Fair enough. I just thought it was interesting that the locals were getting tired of the IM race?

Sorry for posting if it wasn't of interest

My comment was about the article, not your post. If you intended a discussion about the article, don't be put off when someone shares their thoughts about it.

People just need to continue being respectful all around.  It's not really all that hard, but it appears to be for some.

This is disappointing.  I thought I was going to read about drunken debauchery after the race.

I'm soooo sorry they ran stop signs. LMAO

The vast majority of people in Kona seemed genuinely happy to have the event there. A few people were p!ssed that the race and all its events were on the island. I don't think we need to write an article about how "people in Kona hate IM" based on the actions of a few folks. Just like the actions of a few triathletes should not shade how people feel about ALL triathletes.

My wife had a full cup of beer thrown at her from a moving pick up truck on Ali'i drive in 2007 while she was out for a run.

Ouch!

I had a similar situation happen to my wife in Oahu and haven't been back since.  Alot of Hawaiians do not care for tourists.

Really a non-story here.

How is Kona different then Lake Placid, CDA, Madison, or the Woodlands when it comes to triathletes visiting?

It isn't.

When you get a few thousand people together chances are you'll have a small percentage of stupid behavior occurring - this goes for both the athletes and the locals.

I'll add Louisville, where someone through tacks down on the bike course a few years back.

There are bad seeds everywhere and it makes for good press to print (or state) broad, sweeping generalizations.  No one would pay much attention to a story that indicated that only a few people were mad.
