wbattaile - 2011-10-18 7:43 PM Sprints are a gateway triathlon.

can you define "gateway" for me??  i think i am misunderstanding you.

This is a joke likening triathlons to a drug.  They say marijuana is a "gateway" drug.  So sprints, according to the analogy, will only encourage more triathlon training and racing.

My goal for 2012 is also a HIM. I am mainly limited by lack of swimming ability. For those of us coming from a running background and not having swam before it is really hard!

I didn't find triathlon to be the gateway drug, it's the cycling I found addicting. Not that I didn't get that total rush from my first sprint tri, but the expensive part is the cycling.

First I bought a bike. Then shoes, pedals, and biking clothes. Then a computer. Then a trainer. Then another bike. New shoes, pedals, and more clothes. Then wheels. Then a Powertap. When will it end?

thank you, i totally read it the wrong way.

I would totally concur with that statement also.  After that first hit, it is all over but the training, lol

Yeap. I've done one sorta Sprintish Olympic (not sure what you'd call it, it was supposed to be an Olympic but the weather didn't play nice - mother nature tried to wash transition away, so everyone did a 750m swim, an 11mile bike, and then the regularly scheduled run distance, and one slightly over-sized Olympic

And now I find myself registered for Timberman HIM next year. And already thinking about Savageman, and IMC 2013.

This site is a bad influence....

And, of course, Norseman Xtreme... maybe 2014?

Because it would be crazy to jump from a sprint to a 140.6?

I used my 70.3 to see if I might actually want to do a 140.6 one day. Right after the 70.3 I decided to go for it. I'm 2 weeks away from my first, IMFL.

Many of my friends think I'm crazy for attempting this, but to most on this site this route is a normal progression. Welcome to the addiction.

That's awesome :D

It seems like each time I do a race, or a training session, I feel like since I accomplished it, I should to more, longer, faster!!!!

If your goal HIM doesn't sell out early, try doing a couple of Olys first.  Or if you need pressure to motivate, then sign up for the HIM and then use the Olys as part of your training.  It can be done.  This is my first year in Tris (originally a swimmer and had done a couple of slow marathons before) but I went from my first Tri in an Oly in April to a HIM in July to hopefully a finish in a full IM next month at IMAZ.   Either way welcome to the pysch ward!

Your question is exactly what I was looking for this morning. I did 5 sprint distances this past season in my first year of tris. Ended up buying a Cervelo P2 used that was too good a deal to pas up. I was going to step up to Olys next year, but I friend asked if I was interested in doing the Pac Crest long course with her and now I can't get it out of my head.

I am running my second 1/2 marathon in December and if all goes wellin training, I think I'm gonna go for it. I was thinking I was crazy because all the training plans suggest a couple of seasons and at least one Oly first.

I guess I came to the right place to convince myself to go for it!!

I did 5 sprints and 2 half marathons my first year, then NOLA HIM as my first race this year followed by a couple OLYs.

And to the OP, I obsessed about it every day for 20 weeks.  Every single workout I thought "how is this going to feel on race day".  I need to sign up for another one :-).

Because the HIM is the total sweet spot in triathlon racing; long enough to justify travelling to, hard enough that you will really start to see the benefits of a focused training plan (you gotta really train to be ready for long course tri), yet not so long that it totally destroys you to do one. Plus, after yoo finish the 70.3 it won't seem so crazy to you when you sign up for the full the next year.... I like the gateway drug analogy.

I plan on spending my whole 2012 trying to get faster at the 70.3 before I jump back into the IM madness in 2013 (I think.....)
