Subject: Blood Type Diet for Type

My girlfriend loves "entertaining" and has invited one of the owners of the LBS and his wife over for wine and...she has no idea what to serve. The Mrs. LBS is on the Blood Type Diet and is a type A, so my GF is trying to figure out what to serve as hors d'oeuvres. The only idea so far is apples and almond butter, but that won't go well with red wine (I think, maybe? I don't know wine)

I know she'd appreciate ideas from anyone with experience with this diet 'cause we're both at a loss.

Thanks.

I don't know much about the diet, but if I was a guest with dietary issues of any kind, I would either give you some suggestions of my own, or better yet, bring along as a guest gift some dish that I could eat as well as share.

This diet has absolutely no basis in scientific fact. There is no relationship between your blood type and what he suggests as a diet. People who lose weight on this diet simply do so because all the diets he recommends are healthier than what they were eating previously.

Sorry, can't handle pseudoscience. The only benefit is to Dr. Adamo, who made a lot of money.

The blood type diet, while most likely a bunch of hooey, doesn't mean that someone only eats foods beginning with the letter A. If she is blood type A, that blood type supposedly does better with a mostly vegetarian diet.

I don't doubt that the diet is a crock. I like it, but only because it says that type O can eat steak and potatoes, so it works well for me. The woman in question was going to bring her own food, but my GF refuses to allow that; it goes against her Rules for Entertaining. I don't see what the big deal is, but I'm not hosting this and it's not at my house, so it's not happening by my rules.

I emailed Mr. LBS and he's just going to have Mrs. LBS call my GF and maybe I'll stop with the acronyms they'll work it out between themselves.

Let me share a clipping from the Rules for Really Fun Entertaining: When hosting folks from your LBS, order a few pizzas from the best joint in town and have a bunch of beer.

And order an anchovy and artichoke pizza for Mrs. LBS. And have her drink ales.

Another thought.  While I typically can't stand Paula Deen, she did have some good advice on entertaining whilst preparing some buttery, ham, doughy meal thing.  Essentially, "if your guests turn out to be vegetarians, they can just eat something out of the front yard."

I had not heard of this diet until this thread.  Looking at their website, it says that I shouldn't have any chicken, or peanut butter.

There goes those grilled chicken pbj's.Surprised

I would just tell her that, hand her a bag of chips and a beer, and move on.

I'm a little surprised by the responses here. I'm hoping they are jokes.

I think the OP already solved his problem, but I wanted to say it's VERY thoughtful for his wife to care enough to cater to a specific dietary preference. More than I can say for a lot of the posters who responded to the thread. Undecided

To actually provide some input to the question... after looking at the Type A diet which is mostly vegetarian and you are looking for appetizers:

Here is a list of Type A diet appetizers (Google is so awesome).

If I were entertaining, I would make the white bean hummus and serve with veggies.

Something else easy to make (and eat) - and impressive looking - is Italian Flag Toothpicks: on each toothpick stack a mozzarella cheese ball, a grape tomato, and a fresh basil leaf. Drizzle with balsamic vinaigrette.

No no no..... tell them you don't care if they are gluten free! All you have is GLUTEN and there is no scientific reason to be gluten free! (according to this thread)

Obviously I was kidding about the gluten-free cake.  That's sounds like some sort of hippie gibberish.

Don't know.  I'm strictly on the "Eat right for your shoe size" diet.

man- it's amazing what people fall for these days.  Some people even believe that an invisible supernatural deity can hear their thoughts and will grant them wishes.

As much as I like the idea of pizza and beer, Mr. LBS is a vegetarian (almost vegan), and I don't like beer. Well, I don't like wine either, so I'm taking my own beverages since I'll be the only one not drinking.

Lisa, thanks for the link. I'll have a look and forward the list to my GF (not wife, but neither of us mind the mistake). Hopefully she'll figure something out that doesn't require me to buy some exotic food and have it shipped overnight.

75% of the population is A+ so if we are to believe this nonsense then that means 75% of us should eat the same way.

sorry I think if someone is going on a crackpot diet then it is on their shoulders to figure it out and not put the host out.

From what I remember from high school science, doesn't blood type involve two "thingys", ie proteins or something?  I thought when we checked our blood type, some people were AA and some were AO, but essentially they were both considered just A?  So maybe she needs to ask the woman if she is AA or AO?  Would make a difference in what she can eat.

WOW, just did some checking on wikipedia "??The A blood type contains 27 subgroups".  Hmm, you may need to have a blood test taken before this dinner party.

When I'm invited somewhere I just eat what is being served, or I don't if I don't want to eat it.  If I invite you to my house, you can eat what we have, or not eat, or bring your own food.  I won't care either way. The only thing I know for sure is that if you started whining about it, you would never be back and I'd use you as an example to my children of how not to act if you are a guest.

I wouldn't know a gluten if I saw one.

Laughing

We just eat where I'm from.  I have no idea what gluten is, or a "diet".  If you don't like 6 hour smoked ribs, garlic bread, cole slaw, grilled corn on the cob, baked potato, some kind of beans, and beer, then don't come over.  We'll eat the leftovers.

No they aren't.  In the US, it's around 35%.

I agree that people with dietary restrictions/preferences should either bring their own food or not eat/come if it's going to be a huge deal.

The problem is that in my experience, everyone else makes it a big deal. Oh Lisa is not eating? What's wrong? Are you sick? You don't like what we made? Can I run to the store and get you something? You are going to be hungry later, are you sure you don't want just a bite?

Then it turns into uncomfortable conversation revolving around my dietary restrictions/preferences, and complete strangers huffing and puffing about why their diet is superior.

Much like this thread.
