Subject: What happened on my run today?

Bit of an odd experience today while running and no clue of the why behind it.  Woke up a bit late this morning and only had time to squeeze in 8.5 miles of my planned 11.5 mile run.  Everything was great this morning, felt strong albeit a bit fatigued but all systems were go.  Went to the office, typical day and hit the road after work to get the remaining 3 miles in I owed myself.  Two miles into my run I get dizzy and I'm seeing quite large, yellow halos in my vision which lasted around 3/4 mile.  Dizzy feeling continued for a while after and I seemed to be sweating more then I would have guessed after an easy run.  In terms of pace, I picked it up some but I wasn't fully pushing it for such a short effort.

My initial thought was diet and perhaps something to do with sugar levels.  I'm a healthy guy, BP is always normal, no medical issues whatsoever.  Today's diet was:

1/2c oatmeal w/ 1/2c sliced strawberries and bananas, 1tbsp honey, 1 egg

1c strawberries/grapes snack

1 roasted chicken breast and 1/2c wild rice lunch

chobani yogurt and handful almonds snack

maruchan cup of noodles (guilty pleasure once in a while) about 2 hours pre evening run

Does anything stick out there (too few calories with training load maybe) or can I just chalk it all up to fatigue?

The halos make me think migraine along with the dizziness, but it doesn't sound like you had any head pain.  Hmmmm..... Maybe low blood sugar mixed with the fatigue.  How do you feel now?  See a doc if you have any lingering signs and symptoms.

Yes, zero head pain and definitely not a migraine.  Feel fine now outside of general fatigued feeling.  Matter of fact, started feeling better soon after I ate something.  The silver lining?  I grabbed a peanut toffee buzz cliff bar and it was freaking awesome!  Found a new favorite cliff bar

I haven't added up those calories in your diet, but it looks low.  Have you figured out your BMR?  Make sure you aren't severely undercutting your caloric needs.

I've never had the halos, but I've experienced the light-headed/dizzy thing. I've found it generally comes from lack of calories. The fact that you felt better shortly after eating again jives with my experience as well, so that would be my guess. It's probably not useful to look at just one day's diet, but try to look back over the last few days, link it up with total training done in that time period, and I'm willing to bet you just simply went too low with what your body needed today to get in that second workout.

The cup of noodles dehydrated you.

I experienced something similar on a short run last week.  I was dizzy and had the shakes big time at the end (like my blood sugar went crazy).  Never had that before.

I don't have an answer but I would definitely monitor it and if it happens again you may want to go to the doc and have some tests run.

What Scout said.  More food usually answers the strange feelings I get.

That happens to me a few times a year, usually when I train after work and realize I didn't get enough calories.  I can be doing something as dumb as 20 minutes on a gym bike and feel that way.

If you aren't sure of the calories you are eating, or need to eat, I recommend tracking them for a while.  I have tried a few different websites to help with this and for a free option, the "MyPlate" at Livestrong.com is great.     If you tend to eat the same things, you'll become quickly used to the numbers and what you're eating.  Taking your size into account, plus activity, you'd be surprised how much you could eat.

Just so you are aware, migraines can cause visual problems and dizziness but can occur without any head pain.

Yeah that's kind of my thought too.  To be honest, the dizziness wasn't a concern, it was more the crazy halos which were akin to staring at the sun for too long and they stuck around a while.  I didn't stare at the sun though, it had already set.  Daily intake is pretty similar across the board although I will indulge a bit more on weekends (dang football).  Estimated BMR is around 1800 or so calories but that's just going on calculators.  Training load is exactly what shows in my logs.
