Subject: Non WTC "Ironman" race

BT I need your help!

I'm looking for a 140.6 or 70.3 that is not WTC but has "ironman" in the title of the race.  This is for a project for DW.  She is trying to write on WTC and their brand and would like an example or two of races that are titled "ironman" but not WTC.  a 140.6 would be best, but 70.3 would also work!

Thank you!

Doubt she'll find any.  WTC has rights to the "Ironman" name for triathlons and is smart to not allow anyone else to use it.

Ironman70.3 is also a WTC brand as they're trying to get away from the "Half Ironman" moniker.

that was the trouble we had in our searches last night.  I did fine 2 races that had "half ironman" in their descriptions on their website.  They were smaller local races, so I'm led to believe that there is maybe a smallish local race out there that may not have gotten WTCs attention yet and still have the "ironman" name in their name.

You might find some that have "Iron distance" in the name but you won't find Ironman in any of thier names.

Beach 2 Battleship looks like it's official name is "PPD Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon"

The term is trademarked but why do you care whether it's called that or not..... Traveling 70.3 or 140.6 is an enormous accomplishment no matter what you call it .

We're not concerned wether it is termed "Ironman" or not, simply trying to research if any races exist with the name for reference purposes for an article being written.

Lots of races in Taiwan are called "Ironman" races in Chinese... does that count.  If it's helpful, I could send you a couple links to race pages, but they would be in Chinese.

You won't find them in Central Florida. You'll find "Iron Distance" and "Ultra" but not "Ironman distance"

You won't find it, at least in any English speaking countries.

The word "Ironman" as it relates to triathlon and the MDot logo are the most valuable assets WTC has, even more so than the race in Kona. They protect those assets accordingly.

I assume you are just talking Triathlon. But, in Minnesota we have a huge bike ride in the spring with a 100 mile distance called the Ironman ride.

If you find one- then you will have found it prior to WTC finding it and having their lawyer write the race director a 'cease and desist' letter.  As was mentioned above, WTC owns those trademarks and nobody else can use Ironman (for a triathlon... they don't own it for comic book, movies... or even bike rides).

Incidentally- they also own "70.3" and "140.6".  those terms also cannot be used by any other tri organizer to describe their race.

Oh- they also own 5150  (the distance, in Km*100 of an Oly tri)- however that apparently doesn't seem as valuable right now as I hear that those races aren't filling up and many are being cancelled.

Rev3 and now HITS are two other companies putting on a number of races as those distances.

True...but even TheClaaaw was smart enough to use 5168 for the race he started to avoid getting sued.

There is an extremely small race in Homer, Alaska that uses Ironman or Iron Man in the name of the race, but the distance is in between a sprint and an Oly.

Out of curiosity, are you looking to "out" the race for using the name?

Didn't some of the older races use the term "Ironman" back before WTC started enforcing its trademark?  Like Vineman, for instance.  I don't know if that counts for purposes of this exercise

But I suspect that's not what you're looking for

^^^^^THIS is precisely the point to my article.  I want to find it before they do.  Not easy, I know, but worth a look.  I KNOW they own the trademark.  I am writing the article, after all! Tongue out

Thanks for the help, all!  If you see anything, even if it's not in the title of the race (though that's preferable) and just on the website in some form, let me know please!  Thanks!

Why would you want folks on a triathlon message board to publicize some information that would help to get a race organizer into legal trouble?

That's a legit question, and I respect that some people might not want to tell me, even if it is via a private message, for that reason.  I'm not trying to get anybody in legal trouble, just trying to make a point for my article, and my husband thought this would be a good forum to look for info because this is, after all, a triathlete forum.  Who knows races better than people here?

And in reality, there would likely be no "legal trouble."  It would likely be a "cease and desist" letter, triathlon changes its name, and that's that.  Most big corporations won't go after a little guy in court if he gives in to its demands.
