Elite 2768 Raleigh | Subject: Does anyone have tips for getting up early I would like to train in the morning but I just cannot get up early to do it. I end up doing all of my workouts in the evening which cuts into my tv time. Does anyone have trouble getting up to work out or have any tips other than setting the alarm across the room blah blah blah.... |

New user 64 | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early I am an early riser for work, well, compared to most people. I get up around 5:45am. It takes me a little bit to get going, and I do my best work in the morning before lunch. However, actually working out in the morning doesn't sit well with me. I can do it, but just need some time to get going. I prefer training in the afternoon/evening. Now, for actually getting up. I get up super early during hunting season, sometimes 4am or so. Best bet is to give yourself a good reason to get up. You have to WANT to do it. I'll tell ya, waking up in a tent in sub freezing temps half naked will sure make you move quick and get dressed! It's tougher in a warm bed because you just won't want to get up. When I have a plan though, I can get moving easily enough if I just take those first couple steps out of bed. And don't sit down! That's as bad as not getting up, very easy to fall back asleep. well, those tips seem useless after I re-read it... edit: food helps me too, but not if I'm gonna go running. Eating anything will help me get going though. Edited by jdtschida 2005-09-22 9:52 AM |

Pro 3870 Virginia Beach, VA | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early The key for me was to start with only one day a week and gradually add a couple more. I was getting up early 2-3 times a week during the peak of my HIM training. What made it easier was that I was doing masters swim and long group rides early in the AM so it wasn't something I could easily make up if I decided to blow it off. |

Pro 3906 St Charles, IL | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early Going to bed early is the single biggest thing that makes it easy for me to get up early. I used to detest mornings. Now, I've got no problem getting up as long as I go to bed early enough to get 7-8 hours of sleep. -C |

Master 2052 Colorado | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early Get out of bed and put your workout clothes on. Immediately. What are you going to do, get back under the covers with running shoes on? (...actually....). Set up everything you need before you go to bed. Make sports drinks, set up food, put socks in shoes and set next to shirt/shorts, whatever. The less you have to think about the easier it is to get out of bed and out the door. Also, get a coffee maker that's on a timer. Set it to start brewing at 5am or whatever. You'll smell the coffee, and, even better, you can stumble out of bed and drink coffee before you even know what is going on. Which, incidentally, is what I love best about working out in the morning -- I'm usually about 1/3 into my workout before I realize what actually is happening, and by then, it's too late to stop! I also second the 'go to bed early' and 'add days gradually' plan. |

I do all that, too, and it works for me....the less I have to think when I get up the better....once I get some real coffee down, the world seems to change on a dime...I wouldn't make it to most races on time without coffee... |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early It takes only 3 weeks to form a habit. ease yourself into it and it'll become an easy habit. When I started to trian for my first marathon, my long runs would be every Saturday morning- early. When I finished my marathon I was so excited to sleep in Saturday mornings. Only problem was that I got so used to waking up early inteh mornings, that it felt weird not doing it. Now I don't have problems waking up early to train, and prefer to get it over with in the morning to free up my evenings. Here's what helps me: Pack everything the night before- make sure all your work clothes and whatever you need to get ready (if you have to get ready somewhere else) is packed the night before. I even pack my lunch the night before as well so everything is ready to go in the morning. Sometimes I'll even put my backpack in my car the night before so I don't have to worry about it the morning since I'm not coherent at first. Lay out your exerice clothes- I usually put mine in the bathroom- socks and all so that it's easier and I don't have to stumble around for only being half awake. Washing your face in the morning also helps me wake up! Commit to meeting a friend or group of people to train with- that way, you'll feel obligated to get up and go, and less likely to skip. Can't think of anything else- oh yeah...make sure to go to bed early the night before- that way it'll be easier to get up inthe morning! |

Veteran 105 Stormville, NY | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early I started by getting up 15 minutes earlier each morning until I got to the time I wanted to wake up for my workouts. 4:45am!!! I also try to get to bed by 10 the latest. Also get everything you need for your workout in one place ready to go. This way you won't have any excuses like I couldn't find my sneakers or shorts etc. |

Veteran 125 Joplin, MO | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early ...All good advice. Well, the crack cocaine suggestion may be a bit questionable. The only thing I'll add (and it goes along with the "you've got to want to" concept) is to go to sleep thinking/planning out your workout. Running is especially calming for me so thinking about that helps me get to sleep faster and sleep deeper. Sometimes it actually helps me be more excited about getting up at 5:00 in the morning. It's always a bit of a challenge though. But so is a triathlon. Good luck! |

Train when you can and if you are married and really want to trainin the morning just tell your spouse to KICK YOU OUT OF BED if you don't move when the alarm goes off. |

New user 16 Indiana | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early If training with others is a possibility, it can help as well. Getting up to meet a friend(s) is a little easier than getting up to go run by yourself in the dark. You tend to not want to leave other people out to dry even if you don't mind short-changing yourself. I like the idea mentioned above about slowly getting up a few minutes earlier each week. Also, if TV is a priority, TiVo rules!. Get one and watch shows when it's more convenient. Good Luck. Edited by greeney 2005-09-22 12:27 PM |

Kind of like training, you just don't automatically decide to "get up at 5am" every morning to work out. Start slowly, maybe 1-2 times a week (preferably Sat/Sun) to get up early and then go from there. Part of it is also sleep time; get to sleep early and you can wake up early. Personally, I also have the hidden motivation that the earlier I sleep, the less the chance my GF asks me to do chores around the household... |

Extreme Veteran 604 Northwest Ohio | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early I have always been a night owl, and I doubt that will ever change. But I meet a group of running buddies 2-3 times per week at 6:00 and MY HOUSE is the meeting point for the group, so guess what---I get out of bed. Sometimes, I may not get up until 5:50, but I'm up and out in front of my house by 6:00 (otherwise they'll be banging on the windows! ha!) |

Expert 1070 North Carolina | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early Take you bike to work on your bike rack. Ride it home. You will have to get up early the next morning if you plan on making it to work on time. Or meet people for workouts, especially winter morning swims. I hardly ever go to the pool in the morning if it is cold out and I do not have to meet anyone. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early When I used to dance in college we had early morning practices. Every night, I would sleep in what I was wearing to practice the next day (sports bra, shorts, t-shirt, whatever). When the alarm went off, I would literally roll out of bed, put my shoes on and leave the house. If I had something to do after practice (something silly like class) I'd pack my bag the night before with shower crap, clothes, makeup and books. The timed coffee maker is an excellent suggesiton, I have to do that just to get up for work every morning. I also set at least 2 alarms (again, just to get up for work, it's kind of sad), and usually have my boyfriend call to make sure I'm up. Edited by lisac957 2005-09-22 4:05 PM |

Pro 4189 Pittsburgh, my heart is in Glasgow | Subject: RE: Does anyone have tips for getting up early I have the dual alarm and I set my cell to go off. I am a ridiculous morning person though, I love mornings. There's just something more centered about them than nights or the middle of the day. Plus the temp is cooler. Plus you get tons of stuff done before the day even begins. Whenever I workout, I'm always SUPER awake afterwards. I would go to workout before work, work an 8-2 shift, then come home and do laundry and sometimes workout again. |
