Master 2563 University Park, MD | Subject: Fan recommendations for trainer workouts (I know there was a thread on ST on this topic in the past couple of weeks, but it got more wisecracks than real content.) Can anybody recommend a model of fan that works well for their indoor bike trainer workouts? I have been looking around Home Depot, Lowe's etc. this weekend, but it seems that normal people don't need fans at this time of year. Unlike triathletes. So I'll need to order something online, and might as well get something that is recommended. In my current set up on my back porch I have a small-but-enthusiastic Vornado fan that sits on a stool in front of my front wheel. Plus a half-hearted ceiling fan a couple of feet away. This works moderately for steady rides below around 75% FTP, though I'm still fairly soaked by the end. But for harder interval workouts that fan just isn't enough. I'd like to get a fan that can provide more relief on hard workouts, while also being quiet enough that the family doesn't get annoyed when they're in the next room. Also, do people find it adequate to have just one fan, or do you set up a couple, blowing from different directions? |

Subject: RE: Fan recommendations for trainer workouts http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=prod2470368 Lasko Max Performance 20" High Velocity Floor or Wallmount Fan That's the one I use. I used to literally sweat puddles under the bike with two or three different fans until I picked up that fan. I cannot put it on high except for the warmest summer days where the A/C is having trouble keeping up anyway. |

Veteran 284 | Subject: RE: Fan recommendations for trainer workouts I switched from a floor fan to a pedestal fan I got from Amazon. I was specifically looking for one with a remote control so I can turn it off/on and adjust the speed without getting off my bike. It works great, and I can recommend it. http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-18-Adjustable-Pedestal-Remote/dp/B000S2... Key thing I like about my fan - a REMOTE CONTROL! I have one with a remote as well and love it for this. That way when I'm still cool/cold getting on the bike I start it just on low but can increase as needed. Mine is a large box fan that also tilts so I can get it at the right angle. |

X2 I "borrowed" one of these fans from Sams for my daughters outside B-Day party, it kept people cool outside in the yard...that is one strong fan! |

It allows you to direct the air directly at you. I think it works great I just put it in front of me and turn it on high. |

It was something like this. We bought it on Amazon and I read reviews to decide which to get that had free shipping. |

Strong and quiet! This is the one that I currently have. It certainly is strong-ish, and nice and quiet. It also stashes easily under a table when not in use. It's just not strong enough for the harder workouts, in my experience. |

Master 2563 University Park, MD | Subject: RE: Fan recommendations for trainer workouts Just a quick update on this thread from a week ago. I ended up following KathyG's recommendation and getting an AirKing fan from Amazon to replace my small-but-powerful Vornado. Just got in late from a looong day sitting in airplanes to find the fan on my back porch. Couldn't resist the temptation to hop on the bike for a hard trainer ride, to see if it would make a difference. ... Oh yeah. What an improvement! Despite wearing a warm baselayer, I was much drier and cooler than I would have been after a similar ride with my other fan, and possibly even felt stronger. Still not quite as good as outdoors, but those hard interval sessions are looking rather more inviting now. Thank again to everyone for the tips. I love my Vornado fan, but like you say its wind flow is a bit "narrow" and I need to keep it 12 inches from my face to be of any use. Thanks to the advice of the other posters here, just ordered the Lasko 18" pedestal fan w/ remote from Amazon to supplement the Vornado. Just in time for Jorge's workouts |
