Subject: PSA: Bib shorts/tribibs

Since I started cycling, I always heard and read from the fast/skinny folks that bibs were the bomb.  I, however, put off buying any for a variety of reasons: I'm not fast/skinny, too expensive, don't ride far enough, too poseur, blah blah.  Well, in preparation for my last race, I went out and bought a pair of tribibs (DeSoto Forza Riviera Tribibs).  They are exactly what people claim: extremely comfortable, don't cut across your waist when on the bike, keep your lower back out of the sun and so on.  I now have a hard time riding at all wearing shorts, rather than bibs.  They also felt great on the swim and run.

Here's the PSA part you don't hear from the fast/skinny people, if you're a guy or gal that isn't quite yet at your "optimal race weight," these things are a freakin' girdle.  A girdle!  Your race and post-race pictures will never look better.  Go forth and enjoy.

I gotta say that I do love riding with my bibs.  I had no idea there were tri-bibs too!

Goosedog -- I never knew bibs were just for fast/skinny people.  When I was first introduced to them about 15 years ago, my "mentor" told me specifically "these will hold your gutty-gut in!"

That sold me right then and there.  Bibs are the bomb!

I've been wearing my DeSotos since I found out they made Tri-bibs.  They're awesome!

I wear the DeSoto tri bib, too. I also have the coordinating Forza Riviera, but it's too long and the small arm openings chafe on the run. I replaced it with a shorter Sugoi top.

Took me a long time to switch to bibs.   Now it's all I use.

I've never used them. Centuries, HIM, IM, never.

But I'm contemplating a double century next year and am waffling whether I want to get a DeSoto 400 mile bib short for it. Odds are I'll end up with it and give it a shot but I still don't feel the actual NEED for a bib setup.

On the bike it's all I wear.  For some reason I never thought of looking at Tri bibs, even though all I wear is Desoto for Tri stuff.  For the bike training I use MOA bibs.  Love them.  I'll have to check this tri bib thing out...

I'm 5'7" and 132lbs.

they feel good to me as well.  Just bought another pair off Bonktown- so they don't have to be expensive.

my favorite and most comfortable thing to wear is my one piece tri suit.  (zoot ultra race suit), but it's just too freaky for me to wear it for anything but races.

Unless you've worn them, you don't know that you need them.

I am sure someone will have to prove me wrong, but I have never met a person who prefers regular shorts to bibs, once they've worn bib shorts.

My husband has been making fun of bibs for quite a while. We hit up the LBS end of season sale last week and he tried on a bunch of things. I suggested (handed and insisted) that he try a pair of bibs on. He loves them and now understands the hype.

A previously unlisted, yet quite valid, reason as well.

That's not the bibs, that's the sweater he's wearing under it.

Here is what I don't get about "Tri-Bibs", why not just go with a full tri-suit at that point?

Wouldn't it have the same benefits / negatives, without the need for an extra shirt?

Just a thought from someone who doesn't have any bibs... and doesn't like any of his bike shorts so far.

Decent point.  The main reason, I think, is that you can wear your tribibs whilst training and look pro.  A one-piece race suit, not so much.

To add, immediately after racing in the tribibs, I considered a one piece.  I will buy one when DeSoto offers a front-zip, hydro-pocket, Riviera-pad one piece (essentially the ITU with front zip).  Emilio, come on!

For me, I like the tri bib over tri short because I don't like anything tight around the abdomen especially bent over on the bike. The "girdle" effect is just bonus.

I also have several tri suits, but I have some gripe about every one. The small fits on top but is too tight on bottom or too short in the body. The medium fits on bottom but is too loose on top or too long in the body.

The tri bib, just like shorts, lets me mix-and-match different sizes, styles, and brands. I can also pair it with a bike jersey for training rides.
