Overall Rank = 21/48

Pre-race routine:

Staid over at my parents' house on Friday night. Got up around 5 and fixed a light breakfast (ensure and 1/4 of a waffle). Drove to the site and set up the transition area
Event warmup:

jogged a little bit by myself and then with William. Visited with Carol and other racers
Swim
  • 31m 50s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

the wind blew from the west right down the river. probably 10 mph at race start. swam directly into the waves on the long stretch of the swim. not quite white caps but close. amazed that I was this fast.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 03m 32s
Comments:

not bad. got suit off and arm warmers on. little bit of trouble getting the shoes with the covers on the feet
What would you do differently?:

not much
Bike
  • 3h 10m 23s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.65 mile/hr
Comments:

had a tail wind going out at around 10 mph. As the morning went on the wind built closer to 20. by the time you made the turn back west it hit you head on. when you came out of woods into the farms, it was like hitting a wall. Was at the 21 mile mark at 1:05. just spun in from mile 28 trying to save the legs for the run
What would you do differently?:

train more on the bike. get the wind to stop blowing :)
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

fingers wouldn't work too well because they were cold. I had to help William unclip his helmet because his fingers were so stiff as well.
What would you do differently?:

not much
Run
  • 1h 48m 33s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

good run. kept the rotation of the feet moving. walked the aid stations at the turn around to get water in. Other than that ran and smiled.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

stretched and walked back out on the run course to cheer William in. He beat 6 hours on his first half. Shivered. a lot. got packed up and went home to sit in a warm tub.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

bike fitness and the wind on the bike

Event comments:

i enjoy this race. it is in it's second year, but FS does a great job of putting this on. The numbers are smaller, but that is not a bad thing. The location is perfect and the community very supportive.

Great race! It was good to see a friendly face. Great swim and run in such lousy conditions.

Great race! I can't prove it, but I think the wind kept getting stronger too. Near the end gusts hit me so hard I thought I was going to swerve into traffic.

It was nice meeting you and thanks for the advice. My feet froze anyway, but the toe covers were worth the little extra effort.
