Subject: Bike trainer wear on rear tire?
Is rear wheel wear from a bicycle trainer a valid concern? Starting out I will be on standard wheels and will only have the one set so I won't have one I can swap out when using the trainer. I heard that continuous trainer use can "flatten" the tire and make it more susceptible to flats and more dangerous to ride on wet roads. Is there much truth to this or should I as a beginner just get on the bike and the trainer and just ride and get experience?

If you ride any significant time on a " regular " tire it will wear quickly and be more prone to flats. However I used to have Vittori( or whatever they call them) and they did hold up for a little while during last winter riding and I just took them on and off trainer constantly. But after a few months I would not consider using them in a race or for long rides.I use gatorskins for regular riding as well as my trainer and they hold up well and when I race I put on mich pro race 3 tires. So overall, I would either get a trainer tire, use your current tired but plan on replacing them by the springGood luck

Depends on how often you use the trainer and how much pressure the roller exerts, but yes, the trainer does "flatten" the tire. I have flattened two over the last 2 months of trainer use, and one of them wore right through to the casing. These were lower quality tires, on a KK road machine.

Generally, if you're going to spend any significant time on the trainer you should expect to destroy the tire or spend the 45$ on a trainer tire (continental or similar).

Yes, the concerns are very real.  You can use the tire for both, but pay close attention to it. The trainer will wear out the tire significantly faster, generally a flat band where contact is made.

It is a concern, but it does depend somewhat on which tires you are running and the make of your trainer. I ride almost exclusively on my KK trainer with Gatorskins tires. The KK is known to be gentler than most trainers, as it generates little heat, and the Gatorskins are pretty tough, so I've experienced relatively little wear. I think I had been running the same rear tire for about a year before I recently replaced it, and even then that was just a precaution.

Don't worry too much about it, but if you can pick up a cheap wheel (and cassette, etc.) at some point, it can be nice to be able to just swap out the wheel for trainer rides.  You can use an older crappy tire on the trainer wheel and just ride it until it blows out, which is kind of exciting....

Get yourself a POS rear wheel. Odds are you can get the whole setup, used cassette, untruable wheel, rim tape, for around $50 and get a trainer tire.

Yes, a real concern. The tire against the roller causes significant amount of friction which results in heat, hence causing degradation of the tire quite quickly. Usually, you'll see this in form of rubber spray behind and under the trainer and a wide flat (and very shiny) band on the tire. Plus the slippage from a normal road tire does effect the quality of the workout. I kind of discounted this before I tired a trainer tire.
