Pre-race routine:

First Olympic Triathlon, wanted to finish in under 4hrs, did it in 3:46 including asthma attack! Can't wait to do it again next year! Team in Training is the best organization I have worked with in a long time. Met wonderful people and accomplished more than I ever believed I could!

Up at 5:25, had protein drink. Got dressed and walked down to finish setting up T1 @ 6am. Got body marked and dried off my bike and got my chip. Set up my shoes, etc. and then went back to the room and took care of business. Ate a banana w/peanut butter at 7:00. Headed down to the water in time to hang out with the team and see the beginning of the race.
Event warmup:

Walked around, did some arm stretches and leg stretches.
Swim
  • 39m 58s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

Be a faster swimmer!
Transition 1
  • 05m 27s
Comments:

i take way too long drying off my feet! we ran through grass and my feet were wet and covered in grass and i took the time to dry and clean them off. then the second big time waster is putting on my gloves! AND i had to put on my singlet twice as it got so tangled up that i had to pull it off and start over!
Bike
  • 1h 34m 10s
  • 26.5 miles
  • 16.88 mile/hr
Comments:

Never got out of my middle gear! Tried to keep the cadence between 80 and 90 and tried to keep my speed above 16mph
What would you do differently?:

Maybe gear up and push it for a while and see how I do. Mostly flat course except at the beginning and maybe I shouldn't be paying more attention to cadence then speed?
Transition 2
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

Why so slow? Had to pull the pad out of the running shoe as at the last minute I decided not to run with it. Didn't put on the jogging bra as I was convinced I would never get the singlet off, the bra on and the singlet back on!
I did sit down to put on shoes and my knee felt like i wasn't going to be able to get back up. Didn't ride with brace.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure but it feels slow.
Run
  • 1h 24m 8s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 13m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

Where do i start! I walked and jogged the 1st mile. kept reminding myself that the first mile is the worst. Allowed myself to walk 2 minutes at the aide station. Ran the second mile, walked ~2 minutes at the next aide station. Then my race went to hell. Ducked into the bathroom to pee and then put my head under the cold water faucet for about 30 seconds and ran cold water on my neck. Evedently this is not a good idea. Very soon after leaving the bathroom I began to see stars! They were so bad that there were times that I couldn't see my watch! Then the athsma attack started. Walked the next 2 miles. At the midpoint told Eric that I was seeing stars and asked him if that was from "nutrition or air" he said to drink some poweraid at the next station. I was barely able to take a deep enough breath to talk to him. But I didn't tell him 'cause I was determined to finish. Somewhere in mile 4 I met up with Margaret who was doing a 3/2 jog/walk and I told her what was going on and she invited me to pace off of her. I did the rest of the run with her until the end when she took off with her daughter and I did my own thing. When we left the park I was determined to run to the finish and so I did and when I crossed the finish line and was met by my father he asked how I was and I couldn't get enough air to answer so off to the medical tent we went!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not put my head under the faucet! Take and inhailer with me on the run and use it before the race and before the run as well!
Post race
Warm down:

med tent! massage!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not in good enough shape.
not being able to see.
not being able to breathe.

Event comments:

They ran out of water at one of the aide stations on my second time through and there were a lot of people behind me. NOT COOL!

Glad you are okay!!

Nice first Oly....others said the bike and swim were long, if so your speeds were even faster.

Wow...I would have never thought putting water on your head could do that. Great you pushed through and found someone to pace off.

Congrats on  your Oly and raising money for a great cause!

Thanks everyone! Wow, I guess I never checked back to see your great comments! I loved the experience and I am already planning on running again next year
I have signed up to be a Mentor in the Team In Training program for the Memphis In May international and that will be my 2nd Tri of 2006 if all goes well, and Disney should be my 5th!! I'm officially hooked!
Hope to see some of you in Florida, great race, great experience!

Nice job -- I haven't had the pleasure of doing an Olympic distance yet (maybe this season).

I've got asthma as well, so I know how much of a challenge that can be. Always take your meds and go kick some more butt!
