Subject: Total Immersion swim clinic?
Hello,

Like many people, my swim is marginal at best.. I really just started training; 8 weeks in. I have just signed up for local swim lessons, but also came across the Total Immersion program. Amazingly enough they have a weekend workship in two weeks that I could attend.

Has anyone else done a workshop? Is it really as good as they say?

The cost is $445, so I'd like some assurance that it is "worth it"..

search in the forums.. this is often asked.

There are many strong advocates here for whom it has helped a lot.

At the same time, some people don't think as highly of it. I took a pricey half day clinic and have the book but still suck. :p

I don't know anything particular about this clinic, but I would generally think you could get a lot more for your money by hiring a good coach/instructor to give you private lessons once a week or so for a shorter amount of time. In swimming, it's going to take you a while to ingrain any stroke changes you make so that they become natural. You might have a lot of things wrong with your stroke, but it would be extremely difficult for you to make all of those changes at one time and then magically appear at the end of a weekend as a much better swimmer. However, if you were to set up a program with a local coach/instructor to do some private lessons, you should be able to get a few things to think about each time, and then work on those improvements during your swim workouts between lessons. Just my two cents.....

Odd.. I did search for "total immersion" and I only got two hits, so I posted..

It makes sense to me that time is needed to become an efficient swimmer, that is why I am taking lessons as well..

I've heard lots of good stuff about their program and, after reading everything publically available, think it looks like a good investment.  Their techniques appear sound if you're a sinker.

I recently considered the workshop and looked at the agenda for each day. It seemed like there was a lot of classroom time. I decided instead to purchase the book (~$15), the DVD (~$40) and then I found a TI coach that charges $85 for 55 minutes of private instruction. I am going to take things as far as I can with the book and DVD on my own, and then get at least one private coaching lesson. That will cost about $140. Even if I went for two additional private lesions it would still be more than $100 less than the weekend workshop.

Search in forums and choose "All Posts" from the dropdown listbox. I get pages of posts.

I need to get efficient and faster. Otherwise, there's no way I can do longer events.
I'm aiming to get a few private lessons.

I started a thread on TI last week in Tritalk. Lot's of good feedback! I've decided not to take TI and have found someone local to work with. And thanks for the info on searching the forums! I was having no luck searching, but followed the directions and came up with a huge list of swim info. THANK YOU!

TI is great because it taught me how to swim freestyle and I think it's a great way to learn balance.  however, can I trash talk TI's clinics?

My personal opinion is what can you really learn and put into practice in 1 weekend for $450?!?!

I'd much rather spend that $450 on weekly 1-on-1 swim coaching sessions.  You'll get MUCH more bang for your buck because:

  1. you're 1-on-1
  2. you get a couple things to learn then are able to PRACTICE them and ingrain them into your neuromuscular memory until next weeks coaching session
  3. you can really on focus on and learn 1 to 2 things TOPS during any given "session" and make it stick

Anyway, just my $0.02.  Or maybe it's $0.01...don't know.
