Hey,

Is anyone in for one of the Baltimore running festival events (October 15th)? I am signed up for my first half marathon (on my birthday), and am very psyched to get a race T-shirt that is not white, cotton, and unisex.

I'm in for the half marathon too! Also my first half marathon, I'm very excited! Yes, and the race shirt does sound cool. I was looking at the race course elevation last night, looks like miles 3-6 are going to be pretty tough! At least it's toward the beginning though.

Yep, I threw any time goals out the window when I saw that elevation graph - apparently the hill near Hopkins is a killer (but short). I am psyched - looks like O.K. weather, too. I chose this one instead of Hartford, and I'm glad I did - there was a monsoon! Parking looks like a total pain, though - I think I'll get there early and watch the marathon start.

I'm doing the half, it was my very first half last year and this year it will be #4! This is a first rate race with great support and a great post race party. I'm aiming to do it every year.

It is a challenging course, there is no way around it ... but that's what makes it Baltimore. Some buddies of mine were complaining about it recently. I say, if you don't like hills, pick a different race! LOL.

Hope everyone's training is going well.

There are no killer hills on the course ..... just long gradual ones that never seem to end, especially for the marathoners from 16 - 20 miles ....... guess that's the 3 - 7 mile range for the 1/2 runners.

Also, the first 3 are basically uphill.

There is nothing short and steep that kills your time, just the constant effort. But yes, it is not a course to try and set PR's on (unless it is your first at whatever distance which automatically makes it a PR) .

The missus is running this as her first half marathon. She's stood along various marathon courses and cheered me on so many times... I can't wait to pay her back. So I'm out on this one... but will make sure to have plenty of cheer for everyone.

I'm not a fan of huge races with thousands of people... I'm much more of a "heaven is a trail run on a fall day" kind of guy. I've run the NCR Trail marathon or half marathon (NCR is one the weekend of thanksgiving) the last few years, and it is a great race... I'll probably be there again this year too.

NCR caps at 300 people I think... and lest you think you'd miss out on those B-more hills runing on the flat cinder trail, they throw a grueling hill in for the last 2 miles to get you back to the elementary school where the finish is. I've seen a lot of broken runners on that hill after their legs are shot from the first 24.

Yup, NCR was what I used to get my Boston Qualifying run on.  Those last two miles knocked about 4 minutes off of the buffer I had established on the rest of the run.

Still not sure if I'm going to run the 1/2 or the full this year at Baltimore.  It will be about 3 weeks out from IMFL, so I'm looking at doing the full as an easy LSD run since I've participated in the full in the last three years.  I've got that streak going it would be a shame to break ....

I am in for my first Marathon. I am really excited about this. It should be a wonderful journey along the way. I am also doing the Annapolis Triathlon about a month or so before this so it should be a good fall.

I'm doing the Annapolis Oly. as well!

Welcome to the site and enjoy the journey!  Let me know if you have any questions on either race as I've run Baltimore three times now and I grew up in Annapolis and know the area very well.

I don't have that many questions at the moment. I live in Annapolis at the government penitentiary, and I don't mean prison. I will probably have some questions for you after IMFL because I want to try to do that next year.
