Subject: How far is far enough??
Working towards a 1/2 iron early next season. What kind of distances should I be hitting in order to know that I'm ready? Is it a percentage of 1/2 iron distance? For example, if my swim workouts hit 1.9 miles (150% of 1/2 iron distance) or bike workouts hit 75 miles (again, 150% of the distance). Should it be 125% of distance? Higher? Lower?

Is it more of a time thing? If I estimate my 1/2 iron run time to be say 2 hours, should I try to have my workouts reach 3 hours? I think you guys/gals get what I'm asking.

Thanks!!!

I am by no means a coach, but I suggest swims and at least one bike longer than race distance. I would do a 13 mile run and some longer bricks too. But I'm sure others have better advice...take it away...

I'm not a coach either.  But here's what I've found works for me and perhaps you might find some similar things work for you too.

You can gain running endurance by long/slow bike rides so use those to your advantage as you will also (obviously) be gaining biking endurance during these rides too.

Additionally, swim much more than the distance in the 1/2 IM race because swimming is a low impact sport where you can really gain immense aerobic benefit from 10,000-15,000 yards per week in the pool without increasing your risk of injury compared to biking and especially compared to running.
