I'm riding my 10 year old MOUNTAIN BIKE in my first tri this weekend. I went to my LBS at a friend's suggestion to get a spare tube just in case I get a flat (wouldn't that suck). So while I was there I thought I'd peruse the bikes, see what I was missing. I grabbed a road bike (can't remember the brand) and those things are LIGHT! I mean the bag I take to work with my laptop in it is heavier! By comparison my mountain bike must weigh like 3 times as much. Oh, I gotta get me one of those!

I've been spoiled and have been riding a 16 lb all carbon road bike for some time now.  I recently traveled with a cycle team I've been coaching and was assembling all of their bikes.  One poor guy had no choice but to ride an older cruiser style mountain bike for this particular race.  After assembling and carrying around their bikes I picked up my own.  Wow.  You're right.  There is a stark difference.  I've forgotten how good I've got it.

pds0006: When will you be getting your new light-weight bike?

Um yea...

My mountain bike (Specialized Hardrock: No suspension, steel frame) is 29+ pounds.

My road bike (Raleigh Technium: Aluminum frame) is 22.

I think my old Huffy was north of 25 pounds. I am amazed how much more responsive the Raleigh is.

Now working on the engine upgrade.

Yeah...piggish. When I was racing MTBs, my Kestrel CSX with XTR, SID and CrossMax was 20.8lbs.

I've got to concentrate on finishing my first tri before I even think about getting a new bike. Otherwise I'll be sucking wind on the bike leg and thinking "if only I had a sweet road/tri bike, I could be flying through this course!" when the fact is my engine needs more work than anything else. But eventually... OOOOOOoooohhhh yeah, new bike baby!

Yea, but it's the lightest bike I've ever owned!

(Maybe in a few years, I can swing a nicer ride.)
