I know Max and crew are having a Group ride in MA the weekend of 10/22 but some of us can’t make that as we have races.

So, a few of us are trying to hook up a group ride in CT the weekend of 10/29. Aaron (burniect) lives in Mystic (SCENIC!) and is going to look into some different routes for us this weekend.

Can I get an idea of people that would be interested in doing this as well as preferences for time to meet and/or distance of ride?

Hope to see some of you there!

Rob

Time to meet - as early as possible

How far - I am not really sure. I haven't done a ride over 25 miles since August but if the pace is moderate, I should be able to hang in there.

Early for me as well.  I haven't been on my bike since Cranberry, but will all that moiney I just spent, I figure it'll pedal itself

If it is Sunday I probably can do it...Saturdays are impossible.  I live about an hour from Mystic. A nice 30-40 miles would be good for me...but I'm guessing I am slower than most of you.

Mystic is very beautfiul.

I might be able to rope in some others from SE MA to come down. Don't forget there are BTers from RI too!

Maybe 8 would be the earliest for me.

This ride isn't about speed. It's meant to be a fun/comfortable, end-of-the-season, get together and turn the legs kind of thing.

More details to follow...

Looking forward to meeting folks for a ride in this area of CT.  I will try to post a proposed route Sunday evening / Monday morning.  Unfortunately, there isn't one scenic route the hugs the shoreline and stays scenic.  There are a number of scenic areas around Mystic, Noank, Groton - Long Point, Stonington that I ride that would make for a nice ride.  This weekend I will be driving the loop (Tour de Mystic) I'm considering, get the distance down, figure out a meeting place, etc.  If I become computer savy enough will try to post a map

Mark if you bring your race wheels  you can let me use them to keep up with you guys.

Ah but you don't have race wheels...know let see who does have them....ah Capt has them....right?

It is a beautiful spot of CT and should be fun if it isn't raining or snowing then. Just think how much snow we would have if the 9" of rain had been snow...around 90" or so!!

Just wondering how early is early for you folks? I can make it any time but since some folks may be driving a fair distance, we should have some idea of a target time.

Looking forward to the ride!

I've put together ~30 mile ride that will be take us through Old Mystic, Groton Long Point, Noank, Mystic and Stonington Borough (down to the Lighthouse Museum and Stonington Point with a beautiful view of Fisher's Island, Block Island and Long Island Sound).Should be scenic (validated by "Scenic Road" road signs in many places).  I have the benefit of being able to ride here all the time and probably take the area for granted.  Foliage has just started changing colors here so if we're lucky many of the areas should be in vibrant color by then.  I've tried to include a map below (with my technically inept highlighting of the route).   Tried to keep the ride either along Mystic River or Long Island Sound as well as riding throughsome historic areas.  A lot of flat to rolling areas with a couple of hills.  Should be a nice route for acomfortable pace ride.

A few different places where we can meet although I'm considering the parking lot for Go Fish restaurant in OldMystic Village which is at exit 90 off I-95.  Fairly easy to find.  Across the street from the Starbucks (for those of you who want to fillyou bottle up with a mocha or latte)
At Exit 90
- If coming I-95 north turn right onto Whitehall Ave
- If coming I-95 south turn left onto Whitehall Ave
- Turn left at light onto Coogan Blvd (you will see a Steak Loft on your left and Friendly's on the right at this intersection)
-  Proceed on Coogan Blvd to traffic light (Starbuck's will be on right) and make a left followed by left into parking lot.

Cool!!!

That is one fun looking ride and a nice map. How are the hills?

It will take me just over an hour to get there....could we meet at 8:30?

Aaron,

That is AWESOME! I know the area and that is going to be a great ride! Thanks so much for putting that together for us!

As far as parking, how about the Mystic Village Shops? The lot is easy to locate, just off the highway, and Kelley's Pace (a running store) is there!

Kathy, 8:30 is fine with me. Others?

Rob,

We're thinking alike.  Same "Shops" and parking area.  Kelley's Pace is kind of tucked in and not as easy to see from the road as Go Fish.  The directions from I-95 that I posted with the map will get everyone to the spot Rob and I propose meeting at.  I'll defer to the group as to the meeting time.

As far as the hills.  There are really only two to three that could be of any significance.  The first will be when we head out of Mystic down toward Noank and Groton Long Point.  The other will be on Rt 1 when we head out of Mystic toward Stonington.  This hill is a gradual climb with a slightly steeper section at the top.  Probably 0.6 miles long.  The third hill is toward the end of the ride.  Short but slightly steep in one section.  With each of the hills comes a reward of the downhill on the back side.

Read through the posts and not sure if we ever picked a day.  What works better for the group, Saturday or Sunday?  Sunday works a little better for me but I can do either based on the preference of the group.

So, that's 3 votes for Sun. Hope that works for everyone!

Alas, I can't make it Sunday.  I have hockey practice at 10:00.  If it turns out to be Sunday, have a nice ride.

This looks like a cool ride! Man, it's a long ways for me to drive for 30 miles, but I might consider it, depending on the weather. I suppose I could do 2 laps of the course!

If anyone's up for it after the initial loop there's other areas/loops that coud be added versus riding same loop 2nd time.  One in particular that I ride quite a bit heads north toward the casino and could be nice as well.   Not sure of the exact mileage (probably 15-20) but can give it a drive this weekend.  While not as scenic as the coastal route the  loop involves back roads, tree lined areas, ponds.  Road names  include Lantern Hill, Gallup Hill, Pumpkin Hill.  As you can guess from the names the loop is not nearly as flat as the planned 30 mile loop.

I haven't been able to get much bike time in d/t broken pedal and waiting for LBS to open in new location but  if  after finishing the 30 miles I have anything left I could probably be convinced to head out for more to thoroughly trash the legs.

Max,

That would be great if you came down and joined us--same for any other MA BTers!

Let's wait and see how the 1st 30 goes before we sign on for another 15+!

My daughters are doing a duathlon this Sunday...so I can't make it.

I know Chris can't make Sunday but Saturday...Saturday is doable for me.

I really want to make this ride...but parenthood comes first.

Unfortunately I can only do Sunday. But if Saturday is better for the group, by all means make the change. Either day looks like good weather.
