Subject: Gravity Bike Rack--does it work?
I just found this bike rack online (sorry for the long link, I'm going to try to add the image to this post):
http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalog...

It looks like the perfect solution for my apartment, b/c we have two bikes, and don't have a wall with studs where we can install a rack. However, I have a few concerns, and was hoping someone had used this type of rack before:
1. Will it actually work? Meaning, will the bikes stay up on the rack, and not fall if its banged into etc?
2. Will it be able to hold a somewhat heavy hybrid as well as a relatively light road bike? They don't mention a weight limit....
3. Will the legs damage the polished hardwood floors in my apartment?

Any and all opinions are much appreciated!

What brand is yours? It looks sturdier to me than the one I found. Glad to hear it works well.

I have the same one as Stake - got mine from the Brookstone catalogue. i like it, but my hybrid has a sloped top tube, and i keep it on the top rack. it always slopes and the front wheel is up higher than the rear wheel and then it turns and i have black marks on my wall, so i have to secure the wheel to the downtube. really annoying. other than that, it keeps the bikes stable. i keep the road bike on the bottom (more frequent usage).

Stake,

Doesn't yours require a stud to bolt into?  I had the same thing but it had a long screw that had to be put into a stud.  It looks the same as yours but maybe it's not.

Required- no.  It came with an optional bolt that could be used to secure it into a stud, but there is no need.  It is pretty solid.

OK. Isn't this the part where someone like me says, "It doesn't need a stud to bold into if a stud is doing the bolting?''

Here's a link to the Brookstone website - this is a new and IMHO improved gravity bike stand and for $30 less than I paid for mine 2 yrs ago. This one has independent arms that adjust for sloped tubes aka "women's bikes." wish i had this one...mine isn't bolted to the wall - it's fine as is.
