Subject: what's everyone's first race for 06?
Hey Maine-iacs! So 05 is winding down, I was just wondering what big races evryone was planning for for 06. I have one more big race in 05 the Cape Cod Marathon, but after that my schedule is wide open. Here is what I am planning for as far as big races this next year.

-Quebec Ski Challenge 100 miler
-Arizona Ironman
-Sea to Summit New Hampshire (12mile paddle, 90 bike, climb Mt. Washington)
-Vermont Ultra 50 miler or the Finger Lakes Ultra 50 miler
-Western Australian Ironman November

That equates to 1 large race every part of the season, winter, spring, mid summer, and late fall.

Wow, quite the year coming up for you. I'm planning on a handful of local running races through the winter. First tri of the year will be the ironbear sprint in Bowdoin, then Mooseman Half IM in NH, Shipbuilders in Bath, IM Lake Placid, and then we'll see after that, maybe Timberman, maybe the Clarence Demar marathon at the end of September.

My first road race of '06 will be the Mid-winter 10-miler in Cape Elizabeth. I think my first tri of '06 will be the Bowdoin IronBear. These races will be followed by Mooseman & Timberman Half IMs in NH and maybe an Oly distance race somewhere.

Husky, are you already confirmed for LP IM? When I lived overseas I used to watch it on satelite. Looks like a heck of a race. I have hiked and kayaked around Keene Valley, and have seen the hills there, they are killer. Since my last post, I am rethinking the AZ IM as I am not sure if I will have the bike legs for it that early in the year. I have never done a Maine winter and only just got a taste of it this past weekend with 29 inches up in Rangeley where I work. Yikes, that stuff is hard to ride on. LOL

Oh yeah, I'm in, along with a few other local folks - one of which is a coworker who did LP in 2004. As far as the hills, well, what goes up must come down, right? Never did a Maine winter before, eh? Actually, if you're down by the coast (Brunswick) it shouldn't be too bad, the ocean does moderate things a bit. Plan on lots of long sessions on the trainer. I think I was riding outside last year in early March, so you could probably do some long rides outside before Arizona. Are you signed up?

Well, I looked at what you said about training times and weather for the bike, and I was able to talk my way into a later race this year. IMNA is very accomodating when it comes to military thank goodness. I for sure have my slot for Idaho, but I might be able to get a slot for LP instead. So I have made some adjustments to my 06 schedule

Couer D Bois (100 mile Canadian Ski Marathon) Feb 11-12 06
IMNA LP July 23rd 06
VT 50 Sept 06
IMNA FL Nov 4 06 (just got in this morning and will replace Western Australian IM)

Still might do some smaller events here and there, maybe a half IM for training but for big time events, that is what I am doing. I will be honest, the ultra before FL may or may not be a good idea, but the beauty of those kinds of races is that you can wait closer to the actual date to decide. Then again if I qualify for Kona then it all is going to change again lol.

IM LP is a great race- I did it in 2002 and 2003. I messed around an hour too long to get in for 2006 so I'm going to IM Moo(WI) instead. Talking to Rob at Midcoast multisport, he said the hills are worse for Moo than LP. Hooah, another great army day. Actually, I'm little and a decent climber(get passed on some downhills and flats due to being small though) so I liked the LP bike course. I let you know Sept 11 what I think of WI.
My 2006 season-
WDW Marathon 1/8
Mid-winter 10 mile 2/5
Boston Run to Remember Half Marathon 3/12 C
St Anthony's Triathlon 4/30 C
Minnie Marathon 15 K 5/7 C- so no Ironbear
FL 70.3 5/21 A
Mooseman 1/2 IM 6/4 C
West Kennebunk Fire Oly tri 6/18 C
Musselman 1/2 IM 7/16 C
Chicago distance classic 1/2 marathon 8/13?? C
Timberman 1/2 IM 8/20 C
IM WI 9/10 AAA

Everything after IM Moo is in flux. If I'm still in ME, I may do Colby. Depending on how I'm running, I may pick up a fall marathon but Portland may be a little close to Moo for recovery but MDI isn't a very good BQ course. Maybe Hartford? If I have good races at either FL 70.3 or Timberman, I may go to Clearwater in Nov.

Wow, I just noticed this Maine forum. Great.

I think I will do the West Kennebunk Oly on 6/18 - though I am nervous about the swim. I did the sprint there last summer and it seemed much longer than advertised.

Right now, hubby and I are planning on doing the Maine Mtn Bike series so that will detract from triathlons. I may also do the West Kennebunk sprint tri in August, too. I only live a half-hour away from Mother's Beach (site of the race) so I want to do those races!

I haven't been online in a looong time but I love seeing other Mainer's race plans!

I haven't really planned much yet - here is what I'm thinking:

Local 5k in April
Half Marathon in NH in May
Sprint Tri in Syracuse NY area in June
Cayuga Lk Triathlon in Trumansburg NY in August (maybe - conflicts with a class reunion)
West Kennebunk Firemen's Sprint Tri in August

I'd like to find a 100mi bike ride to do also but I haven't researched that yet.
