I've only ever gone skiing twice, and each time was to Bear Valley, CA.  I can say it's probably not the best place ever, but it was perfect for me as a beginner.  The bunny hill was all I ever saw.

I made the BF promise to take me skiing at least 3 times this season.  But now they're saying we're in for a warm, dry winter.

My cousin and her husband are hoping to set up a ski trip with us, and I was thinking we could either stay here in CA and head to Tahoe, or maybe plan a trip out of state.  I've always wanted to see British Columbia, so this may be my chance!

Have a great ski season all you Northern Hemisphere folks.

I am a big fan of Winter Park, although I haven't been able to ski as much in the West as I would like.

Would appreciate peoples thoughts.... traversing through California on the way to New York in Feb, thought I might try and get a weekend in.. (Aussie ski-ing is not exactly world renowned and I'm getting twitchy as I keep watching ski DVDs!) - what do people reckon is the best thing to do? Fly via LA or SF? Worth getting a hop up to Vancouver to go to Whistler or Mammoth or something like that more practical?

OK, gotta weigh in on this one....

Glades:  Steamboat - hands down
Bowls:  Vail, since they expanded their terrain
Steeps:  BIG SKY (this is the darkhorse - chutes labeled A through zz)
Groomers:  Snowbasin, UT (yes, it's awesome - Olympic downhill here.  Did a 56K vertical day)
Powder:  Alta...just get your friggin champagne glasses on.  It's un-be-lievable
Rich People:  Deer Valley - gold plated urinals?  I think so...
Nightlife / Family friendly:  Breckenridge (Summit County)
Next Stops:  Whistler, Banff, Sun Valley, Jackson Hole, Tuckerman.

Max...I'm completely digging tuckerman.  That's now on my list.

Most definitely worth the hop to BC and Whistler.  There are tons of Aussies there every winter too so you'd feel right at home!  If you stay in California then go the Tahoe route.  Squaw Valley and Heavenly are great and there are several other areas almost as good.  Have a great time!

Not the best skiing (by FAR), but the most beautiful location, Badger Pass, in Yosemite Valley, learned to ski there when I was five.  Yosemite in winter is breathtaking

Well, I'm certainly no expert (see post above), but when I asked my BF, he said Tahoe is great only because there are so many different resorts there.  I think his quote was "You can spend two weeks there, and not ski the same hill twice."

Awesome - thanks for comments - looks like Tahoe or Whistler then.

BTW - my favourite would have to be Val Thorens in the 3Valleys just for ski-ing hard and fast and Chamonix for extreme, extreme, extreme. Could spend (and nearly did... 45 days) ski-ing alternate days on the Grande Montet and Vallee Blanche...

Having said that, Alta is the best for snow/terrain combination.  AND...big plus...no snowboards!!  (let the flaming begin!! )    p>

*Sigh* Snowboarders will never overcome the prejudice of skiers. Don't playa hate, congratulate! Try snowboarding sometime, you might find that you like it.

I understand the jealousy of skiers though, because it is true, you will never, ever have as good a feeling as hitting deep powder on a snowboard. Skiing is great, and powder skis are fine, but boarding powder is just this side of heaven. Oh, and the pure carve of a race board on a groomer? You can't get that on 2 edges.

One more thing: Aren't you skiers thankful that snowboards gave birth to parabolic skis? Snowboarding revived skiing which was a dying sport not long ago.

My nephew loves the snowboarding.

I have no objections to snowboarding, none at all. And I do love my parabolics!

Have you seen the skiers who use those little baby skis? They're about 2 feet long?

St. Moritz - another lovely location but not as great as Canazei. Tough to beat the Dolomitis.

I love those little kids on their skis. No fear at all. We get tons of them here around Montreal. I saw a little kid, maybe 4 years old on a snowboard, but a racing board (there's a fairly significant difference between race and freestyle, the main one being that race is tons harder. I have one of each board and believe me, it's the difference between walking on a sidewalk and walking on an I-beam).

I don't really want to hijack the thread but had to respond!  I don't hate snowboarders.  My son snowboards and we've had a lot of great days together on the hill.  And yeah, snowboards did give rise to fat skis, a fabulous advance in skiing!  Only a couple things that bother me about snowboarders.  First, it is easier to get down the hill for a beginner...sideways and scraping every inch of fresh of the hill as they do.  That will bring a skier (and a good boarder too) to a boil every time.  Second, my job is to fly critically injured folks off the mountain.  A couple years ago we did a 3 year chart review of flights to ski areas.  96% of the flights involved snowboarders.  Either a snowboarder themselves or a skier they had hit while boarding recklessly.  And every single out-of-bounds rescue effort I've been involved in over the last 5 years has involved snowboarders.  Finally, I have never met a snowboarder who could go anywhere on the mountain any easier than I can on my skis, including skiing in deep powder.  Snowboards have definitely revived the snow riding industry, there's no doubt.  And it's really enjoyable to watch a skilled boarder CARVE down the mountain.  But it's nice to have one or two places for skiers to go where we can still have round moguls and the snow doesn't get scraped off early.  Ok...no more hijacking for me!  We all ride on the same snow and we all have a smile on our face at the end of the day so it's all good.  Now if it would just start snowing!!!

Should I start a new thread to respond? Nah!

My observations:

Crappy skiers often blame their failures on good snowboarders. i.e. They eat sh!t, then say it's because a snowboarder cut them off.

As a proportion of the total population of each group, there are far more crappy skiers than snowboarders.

The accusation that snowboarders scrape all the snow off the hill is a bit of a red herring. I can't say how many times I have seen skiers perform poorly executed turns thus scraping vast quantities of snow downhill, they just do it with 2 boards rather than 1.

Often skiers assume that they are the only people who know how to execute their chosen sport. In my experience, there are far more skiers out there who go once every 5 years or so and never really mastered the sport to begin with.

As to the rescues that you have performed on out of bounds snowboarders, I don't know what to infer from that: Snowboarders are more reckless? Skiers stay inbounds more?

Having said all this, I have no problems with skiers because I know how to board, thus avoiding the dangerous ones. Ditto for boarders.

This sounds harsh. It's not intended to be. We should all get together at a famous resort, we can all stay at the chalet of one of the members of this board, and hold hands around the fire. Yeah, that's the ticket, a free vacation...

Nah, these are not kiddie skis. Adults use them. They extend about 6 inches (front and back) beyond the boot bindings. Are they skating skis? Snowblades?

Ah yes! Now that is what I call A Concussion Waiting to Happen. Talk about people who don't have the skills to be on the mountain. Best to give those people a wide berth, because if they bought those things, it's cuz they never really got the hang of real skis.

I've seen people dig the tips of those things into a mogul and go head first into another one. Nothing is uglier than seeing those people careening down the hill at breakneck speed without the basic ability to stop or turn. Ugly, I tell ya!

My favourite ski/snowboard expression? A yard sale. When somebody wipes out so bad that they leave a trail of equipment for 50 feet.

for our Aussie friend: in CA, the best skiing is in the Lake Tahoe area, which is part of the Sierra Nevadas bordering California and Nevada. It's about 5 hours of driving from the SF Bay Area if I recall correctly. Try looking at Squaw Valley, for example.

Back in high school, when we couldn't afford hotels, a buddy and I would make day trips from Oakland CA to a place that had "night" skiing. The pass was good from 1pm to 10pm, and the slopes were lit though icy after dark. Those were good times.

Then in college, when we still couldn't really afford hotels, we'd pile a whole bunch of people into a condo, ski by day, and go to the casinos in Reno, Nevada by night. Gambling is legal in Nevada but not in California. Of course we were all under 21 so it wasn't legal for us, so we'd hang around until all the guys had gotten kicked out. Of course as a female patron, even though I looked about 14 at the time, I never got kicked out of anywhere. Memories!

Alta or Snowbird if you're in Utah.

Sun Valley if you're in Idaho. I used to live in there.

Whistler Blackcomb if you're alive in North America, or if you're alive and have access to a credit card that may or may not be yours, or if you're alive anywhere in the world and can beg, borrow or steal your way there. Absolutely fan-tastic skiing.

Of course, skiing ruined my knees, and I'm only now recovered enough to be able to run regularly.

Out of bound skiing at Les Arcs in France.

Went there for a week and did out of bound skiing the whole time with a guide, just like in the movies!!! Ski like crazt until about 1h30, then stop for lunch in small villages right on the mountain. good food, good wine, and crawl (ski crawling) your way back to the hotel.

The best!

Have tried to ski in Europe (Innsbrook) before but it was sub-freezing conditions (e.g. below -20 degrees). Call me wimpy and I hated to pass up the opportunity, but I am not into survival skiing! That being said, I would love to try it ...

I grew up with a father that loved to ski - and I was more than happy to serve as his excuse to go skiing in the winter. Grew up in WDC, so I learned to ski in Vermont (Sugarbush + Killington as well as just about every other major resort in the area); the ice and rocks made me a better skier.

Have also skied the Salt Lake City area (Park City = overrated/Sundance = underrated + Alta was just right), Squaw Valley (great moguls + conditions) on numerous occasions and numerous places in between. (Disclaimer: haven't had the chance to ski New Mexico nor Wyoming ... so they are out the sample.)

Vail is, hands down, the best resort I have been to. The back bowls are fantastic and the conditions are consistenly great. There is a good variety of skiing (bumps, bowls, backwoods, groomed, freestyle, etc.) and well as variety among different level of runs (plenty of green and blue to the notorious blacks).

My wife and I go every year + stay with a friend who has a condo on Gore's Creek (near the Vista Bahn lift) ... so the Vail tax (e.g. expect to pay between 15-25% more for everything) is not as daunting.

As luck would have it, I have a meeting scheduled in Denver the second week in January Therefore, I'll just have to extend our New Year's Eve through the first week of January trip by a few days! (Coincidence? I think not ...!)
