My favorite so far... Canazei (Val di Fassa), Italy. There is a glacier there called the Marmolada. That mountain rescue thriller movie with Sylvester Stallone was shot at this location.

Wide open bowls, gorgeous Italian men of all ages, and fantastic Italian food. What could be better? How about a mid-run bar/cantina where they serve a nice hot toddy known as Il Bombardino - steamed and frothed egg liqueur with a shot of grappa. For courage as you approach the steepest and last portion of the run.

I've never been to Europe for snowboarding, but I've been to the Banff - Lake Louise area, Fernie (Southeast B.C.) and Snowbird, Utah.

Without hesitation, Snowbird is the best. Best steeps, best snow, most snow, best chance of getting powder.

Having said that, Fernie is a beautiful mountain, lots of snow, nice challenging terrain, and not nearly as pricey as most places of its calibre. I've been twice.

I've always wanted to learn to ski but I'm afraid of busting up my knees.

My wife and I plan on visiting Banff late in 06 or early 07.  I've heard its amazing.

If you don't already have knee problems, you probably won't get them by learning how to ski. The Banff area is beautiful, well worth a visit.

I've gone skiing in Europe and I still like the Rockies better. My favorite place I've been to so far would have to be Heavenly. I'm going to Whistler in late January, which I've heard is incredible so I'll let you know.

I've skied Heavenly and it's a LOVELY location. Felt like a baby-ski run in comparison to the wide open bowls of Canazei. I've heard great things about Whistler.

I've known far too many people who've come back from Ski trips with torn knee cartilage and broken legs.  I don't have knee problems but I'm too clumsy to take up a sport like ski'ing.  Maybe snow boarding would be better for my type.

Michael,

Take lessons, take lessons, take lessons. You'll have a GREAT time if you take lessons.

You're not supposed to use your knees, you're supposed to push your weight forward onto your shins and let the boot/skis do the work. At least, that is my vague recollection since it's been toooooo friggin' long since I've gone skiing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need to ski...

That's why I think snow boarding would be better for me.  Just clip in, tie a pillow to my ass and go.  I think there's too many elements to regular skiing.  I tend to fumble when there's too many things to think about....that's why I'm a lousy swimmer.

The snow in Utah is the best. I will agree Snowbird is great but Alta, The Canyons and Powder Mountain are awesome.

I'm a snowboarder, so Alta is out. I hear the Park City area gets less snow, is that true. I don't know about Powder Mountain, but the Canyons is waaay more expensive, isn't it?

Well I'm from the best skiing area in the world. NY - NOT. Best place I've skiied is Mount Saint Anne in Quebec. It was great. I was there 7 years ago. All it did was so. Hopefully if I get to make this move to CA I'll be doing some real skiing.

Utah is great. Deer Valley is the best in the world for relaxing skiing--not very hard but the snowy is sooooooooo sweet!

Alta rocks for some more challenging runs. Crested Butte is cold but has such excellent terrain. The skiing's okay in Breckenridge, but the town is so much fun at night.

Hard to pick a favorite. Whistler and Blackcomb are hard to pass up--especially if you stay over in Vancouver for a few days.

Much as I would love to ski in the Rockies or in Italy, the best I've skied was Mont Tremblant in Quebec.  It is a very nice ski area.  I will be spending Christmas there with the family this year!

Whistler is unbeatable in terms of terrain... some find the snow a little heavy as the coastal mountains are pretty warm and wet (relative to say Colorado) but usually lots of it - last year was an abhorition!

Lived there for a while so there may be some bias creeping in... Been all over NA but I've only been to Kitzbuhel in Europe. I'd love to go to La Grave, it is apparently "incroyable"!

hhmm Love Killington because I learned to ski there.  Love Snowmass because it is massive.  Skiied Kitzbuhl on the Glacier in July about a million years ago.

Tuckerman Ravine on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. No lifts. Carry your skis, all your equipment on your back, 3 miles to the base of the bowl. Then climb the headwall, kicking steps into the face that is so steep it's like climbing a ladder against the side of your house. Take one run down, scaring the living begeezus out of yourself. Gather up courage, climb up again, take another run. After a day of this, doing an Ironman will feel like kid stuff. Oh yeah, watch out for avalanches, and whatever you do, DON'T FALL! Make that mistake and you will slide, tumble and crash down a thousand feet, possibly crashing into jagged rocks.

We don't need no stinkin' lifts!

Whistler/Blackcomb are the best in North America, hands down.  Total combination of outrageous steeps, miles long groomers, and night life second to none.  Love to ski there.  Having said that, Alta is the best for snow/terrain combination.  AND...big plus...no snowboards!!  (let the flaming begin!! )    Sun Valley has great atmosphere and history and probably the longest, consistent fall-line in the US, but it doesn't get the greatest snow.  And for total snowfall, you can't beat Mt. Baker in NW Washington state.  Consistently the most snow in North America.  A few years ago they got over 1,200 inches...in one winter!!

I just wish it would HURRY UP AND START SNOWING...NOW!!!
