Subject: anyone done an ultra-marathon?

Anyone done an ultra-marathon? For something new and different, I've added the Huntington Ultra Frigid Fifty, "The Huff" a 50k trail race to my calendar. It's not supposed to be terrible difficult terrain. I figured that it would be doable since I'll have a couple of 20+ milers under my belt as I train for a January marathon.

Any other training advice? Strategy? It's three loops, so I was thinking I'd walk the first 10 miles, then run the rest like a long run. I'm not wanting to be competitive but I want to be ready. It'll be tough, but I'm up for it!

no, but i think its awesome that you are doing one! i was just reading about the hardrock 100 and thinking 'hmmm, i never thought i would do a 1/2 marathon and now they seem easy enough that i'm thinking about a marathon...once i've done a few marathons, maybe 100 would seem like a reasonable challenge?' but then i snapped out of it and just sat in awe of the accomplishment of those who do it. have an awesome time!

It's funny what soem endorphins can make you believe is possible!

Anyway, I'm planning on following my marathon schedule but adding some walking after a couple of the long runs. I want to do my long runs at my goal training pace, but still want to spend some extra time moving on my feet to get ready for the 50k.

Good luck with that, it was originally on my schedule but I just haven't had the time (or energy) to change gears after doing my first Olympic distance event.

That;s how most of us got to do Ultras! First with the local 10ks... then the half marys, then the full... it just keeps going longer the more involved we get into the sport!

A 50K is only 31 miles ....... you can handle that! Just act as if you are training for a double, then the finish will come up quick!

More power to you! Not something that I would necessarily want to try after just finishing my first full marathon. Best of luck!

I'm actually doing my 1st ultra in (3) weeks at the JFK 50 Miler in Hagerstown, MD. It's (2) week's after this Sunday's NYC Marathon which should prove to be interesting.

Thus far my longest training runs have been:

(1) 25 miler
(2) 30 milers
(2) 35 milers

Nearly all off-road on trails/XC courses. Funny thing is that w/ all this LSD volume I still managed a 1:17:50 PR for the 1/2 marathon (4) weeks ago.

NYC should be fun, but I'm still trying to kick a nasty cold which will not let go. I've curtailed nearly all of my running (ran 3 miles yesterday and my HR was through the roof at a jog) but I've still got 5 days of R&R to hopefully get back to 100%.

Anyway, shoot me a line at the end of the month and I'll let you know how things go at the 50. I'll post a link to my race reports as I usually do.

Happy training!
