That thread about sauna post-workout got me thinking. What do you think would be acceptable attire for sauna/steam room? Swimsuit? A towel? or your birthday suit?

That depends, are we talking about a co-ed Sauna/Steamroom?

Yea, if it is co-ed is should always be birthday suit....

Oh wait, never mind. The Y I have back home has a men only sauna so it is either towels or bday suit, I guess depends on if you feel ok about your body.

The one I belong to now is co-ed so it is shorts etc.

I stopped by the swim center I plan on joining for my swim training and they had a sauna room there that looks co-ed, so I'm figuring it will be bathing suit after my swim if I have time to use it.

It will be single-sex sauna/steam room. Personally, I would prefer choice #3 cus' I really like to warm up my tummy. If I wear my swimsuit, somehow my tummy would stay cold like jello even though my extremeties are warm. Do people get offended if the person he/she is sharing the room with is in nude?

I'm not sure, where exactly is this sauna that you'll be using located and when exactly will you be there?

Well, is it situated inside the ladies' locker room. I am usually the person using it. However, there is no way to turn the light down. So people can see me from the outside.

Oh, if it's all single-sex and out of sight of the prying eyes of the opposite gender then do whatever. Maybe it's different in the ladies locker room, but in the guy's, swim suits in the sauna are the exception, not the rule.

P.S. Sorry to creep you out, I missed the single sex part in the other email. I guess I thought the whole world had just gone hyper liberal... that or you were European.

if we're talking sauna/steam room etiquette, i actually tried my first steam a cuople weeks ago and LOVED it.

question, though.
when I went in there was a guy who had just walked in ahead of me and he said "Hang on and I'll spray it down" and took a hose and rinsed off the steps...and I'm thinknig...Huh, that makes sense. you figure you got people in there who are sitting there sweating...all that moisture and stuff, some of it is people's body fluids (okay, i'm grossing myself out)

okay, my question...i went in a couple days later and there were already people sitting down. Is it okay to still rinse off my area? or am I being too picky? what is proper protocol?

sorry, i missed the other thread.

What about wearing a two piece sport suit?  That would expose your tummy and be enough coverage to keep from offending those who are easily offended.

I'd say b-day suit. The last gym I belonged too had a sauna, steamroom, and hot tub in the women's change room area - I never saw anyone wearing anything other than a smile , and often women would be totally sprawled out in the sauna. I don't think anyone can be offended if it's in a locker room.

Yeah, may be I should.. Just the bottom. Separate my bum from the sweat-soaked bench too.

The Y I go to has sauna rooms in each locker room.  Most people go in there naked.  They bring a towel in so taht they can sit on it  :p

I go in naked and sit on my towel when I go to the men's sauna at the university pool.  For a co-ed sauna, I wear shorts or a swim suit.

Naked and sitting on a towel is what I do., unless I'm having a bad-body day and then I do whatever feels psychologically comfortable.
