Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 6. Ate my bowl of oatmeal and made some waffles for the kiddie (she ran the Healthy Kids Fun Run). Hopped the metro and arrived at the Pentagon around 8:15.
Event warmup:

Did an easy 10 minute jog prior to the gun going off.
Run
  • 38m 8s
  • 4.97 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Overall, not a bad run. Had a bit of a tough time getting through the crowd the first 3 or 4 minutes, but then I had plenty of space. The course was flat and fast, with the only issue being the wind in three or 4 places. The course took us through the "crystal city street spectacular", set up for the marathon (we got there about 45 minutes ahead of the marathon leaders) so it was kind of nice, seeing that kind of turn out during a 5 mile run. The finish up the hill to Iwo is always brutal, but I put in a nice kick at the end. I had no idea what time I was shooting for, so this pace was a nice surprise.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more water.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some food and hung out in the VIP tent (it pays to know people :-). I had a nice conversation with the #2 marathon finisher (a friend of a friend). Turns out he lost by 8 seconds to a no-name guy who came out of no where. Hell of a nice guy though.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training (as usual)

Event comments:

I never did get to see any of our BT folks on the run. Best of luck guys....

Nice run, bro.  Why'd ya stop drinking?  That most likely kept you off 7:30's.  But still a great run.  Hope the weekend was good, too...

Nah, anything less than a 10k and you really don't need to drink. Plus you lose a bit of time if you do not know "how to drink" while racing, not too mention getting it all over your shirt!

Nice run. Congrats.

Thanks guys.

eta- The drinking issue was before the run.  There was no water down by the 8k start, so I had to chase my hammer gel with gatorade.  Not ideal, but I didn't suffer too bad.

Great race, Mike!  I'm glad you enjoyed the pasta in the VIP tent

Kidding, kidding...thanks for hanging around all weekend!  I had fun!   Enjoy the rest of the beer (if it isn't gone yet).

Some of us had to secure the VIP tent and ensure the safety of all the GO's hanging around, as well as guard the food supply (amatures think tactics, professionals think logistics- remember).  Personally I would have been happy to join the masses, but I do not question orders.  Feel better in the knowledge that yes, blood still does make the grass grow.
