Subject: Spinning classes
Hi there

Just wondered if anyone can help me out with a query? I haven't actually purchased a bike yet but I do about 3 one hour spinning classes every week (tough workouts too!!) As far as tri training goes, how good do you think the spinning class is as opposed to actually getting out there on the road?

Cheers

Luke

IMHO,  Spinning class is a great workout but it's no substitute for being on the bike.

It doesn't subsititute, Luke, but it's a good start... better than a stationary bike.

Don't hold off on the bike purchase until just before you begin racing. You really want to have the road experience, the feel of your bike, and to experience the difference of spin-bike v. road-bike.

I agree.

There is no way to simulate road conditions/hills.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE WIND.

maybe I have been in Chicago too long!

Yep, you have to get out on the road. Every spring, I come off the indoor trainer thinking that I am in pretty good shape, then WHAM!! a short ride outside seems exhausting. The temperature, wind and resistance make all the difference.

one hour spin class should be eqivilent to 21 mile bike ride. and it is great for preparation for race but it does not build experience for biking though. I have been spinning for training and it has helped, but I have been riding for many years.

I really enjoy a spinning class but as it has bee suggested here definitely get out there and ride the bike on the road. There are a few variables on the road that you can't reproduce in the class, wind, sun, rain and an angry dog chasing you.
