Subject: BRICKs in the off-season?

Right now, I'm focusing on long distance running and improving my swim technique with a little cycling thrown in here and there. Should I still be doing the odd brick workout just so that my legs don't forget what they learned this past season?

if it's off-season, focus on core. If you want, maybe do a brick occassionally for a change of pace. recovering and re-establishing pace is best.

BTW, your off-season focus sounds just like mine: lots of aerobic running, spinning, and swim technique sessions

How slow are you two going with your disciplines?

I am doing the same, sans swimming and trying to focus on keeping my HR under my 180-age formula, which means I am going REALLY slow most of the time.

So are you doing everything slow, or actually doing some tempo work as well?

I skip the bricks. I focus on other things that need improvement and begin again in the spring.

Do you still do 9 workouts a week in 6 days (w/ 1 day of rest), or do you scale back a bit? Coming off my first season, I'm also confused about how much to work out now. I don't want to lose what I have gained thus far.

I am still doing some bricks, but only because I like to run so much. but, even when I do I am trying to keep both slow...

I scale back my distances. Because I incoporate weight lifting into my off season workouts I don't do everything I do in the spring. I will take a spin class once a week to keep the endurance in my legs. I swim 2-3 times a week and will run when my legs aren't too sore.

Somedays when I am feeling good in the pool or running I will push myself either with sprints or the distances.

My opinion is that there's nothing wrong with doing easy or moderate bricks in the offseason.  Doing them will keep the legs used to moving that blood around and teach the body to maintain important form and technique.

after my first tri-season, all i want to do is rest-up. The bricks are the furthest thing from my mind and I'm more into focusing on starting up base in each discipline before combining them for brick sessions. Most of my focus is on running actually because it's the activity I missed the most this past tri-season (45 mpw is a bit too low of my side, I prefer the 60 mpw route) and technique work for swim. For cycling it's just indoor trainers since I hate the cold weather cycling aspect so far.

For now, establish a foundation, incorporate strength workouts, and definately scale back the workload. We're not trying to be January podium placers here!

I will usually run 5-10 minutes after each spin session, and 10-20 min. after my mtn. bike ride of 80 min.  These brick sessions are generally moderate pace, just to keep muscle memory for next season.  This year I decided to stay in better shape, because it is too hard to start from scratch in March. My only advice is don't go too hard this early in the season.  On top of your distance building, I would recommend core strength training for the off-season.
