Pre-race routine:

Normal breakfast and pondered what was right to wear in the snow turning to rain 28-30 degree range. What is more fun than running in the snow like when we were kids?
Event warmup:

No time...followed the pack of people to the starting line...jumped up and down in place and talked with others.

Comments:

It was very slippery with slush, snow and wet pavement most of the way. When the race started it was snowing. I slipped a bunch so I slowed down and took smaller strides. By .5 mile in I was at the back of the pack with about 5 others. I tried to catch snowflakes with my tongue as I ran. Mile two my hamstrings acted up a little. Mile 3 was uphill mostly and here I tried to get in a good mental place...since I was last at that time and it was nasty outside..I kept reminding myself I'm doing this for fun and it was fun. 5 mile is quite a bit longer race than a 5K...different kind of people and I have to pace myself better. It was hard to get good footing...slipping on the slush so I opted to run off the road in what would be the gravel shoulder...less slipper but more bumpy...no real good place to run. By Mile 4 it was raining now.....when I got to a corner a person directing said we were at a mile 4 just one more to go, I didn't believe I ran a 9:44 mile and questioned her...yes we were at mile 4. About 2 minutes later I ran by the mile 4 sign. Why do people lie? Last mile I did pass 4 people...and I finished strong...passing the last guy on the home stretch. When I finished my husband asked if I needed my inahler since I was breathing so heavily.

Best thing of the day was that they gave me a medium t-shirt instead of the large or x-large I requested and it fits!
What would you do differently?:

Keep on training and losing weight. This afternoon was beautiful....it would have been easier to run not in the snow/rain. I did the best I could, enjoyed the race, embraced the weather and burned some calories.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back to middle school and got water..since there were no water stops on the run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Same as normal...bad genes...being 44 and overweight....snow/rain/slush.

Event comments:

Lots of town people there who all seemed to know each other. If I lived in Easton it would be great. Nice long sleeve t-shirt.

Great race Kathy. Darn, wish we could have had you with us at Andover, you would have been right with our pace. And you would have beaten over 300 other runners!!! Some day we all gotta get in the same race together.

Way to overcome the yucky race conditions.  5 miles is a lot different than a 5K - but you did it...and got a medium shirt to boot.  FANTASTIC.
