Subject: Tires Keep Flatting While Bike is at Rest??

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I have encountered a new phenomenon in my bike world.  My new Cannondale's tires keep going flat while the bike sits in my closet.  It is very wierd.  I'll go out for a ride, and have no problems.  I then bring the bike inside and put it in its comfy little closet and in a few days, both tires are completely flat.  It has happened three times in a row.  The funny thing is, my tri bike is in the same closet and doesn't get any flats?

Any idea what would cause this?  Maybe my tri bike is sabotaging me out of jealousy that the roadie is getting my attention?

You either have slow leaks in both tubes, or your other bike is getting revenge on this one for riding it.

Pull the tubes and check them for punctures and test the valve to make sure it is not leaking. Worst case, replace both tubes (after checking the tires for any penetrations and making sure the rim tape is in place so none of the spoke holes are causing a problem) and see if it conitnues to happen.

Hey Brandt,
Have you filled the road bike tires with C02? I had a tire go flat that had C02 in it after it sat for about a week. I think it will escape through the tube like helium in a balloon.
How long does it take to go flat? Is it both wheels? Is it after a ride?
Does your tri bike get jelouse like that?

When you change the tubes (which you should do) check the inside of the tires carefully for sharpies and debris. Also have a good look at your rim strips. Often a worn or poorly installed rim strip will allow a spoke to poke through and give you a flat from the rim side and not from the tire side. If your bike has plastic rim strips, do yourself a favor and replace them with some Velox cotton strips.

I'll check all of the above...also may take to LBS and let them do it since they assembled the thing and its only been ridden a few times....seems we shouldn't be having these problems so quickly.

My tires generally lose some air between rides, but unless there is a hole or a bad valve they don't go completely flat. And that's after a few weeks sometimes.

Since the bike is new, I wouldn't hesitate taking it to the LBS to have them look it over.

My guess is it's 'cause Brownsville sucks. Don't know why it doesn't effect the other bike.

I would bet that the CO2 isn't escaping from the tube like helium. CO2 is a huge molecule in comparison with helium. CO2 should in theory should stay in the tube better than atmospheric air which is 80% Nitrogen, 20% Oxygen.

I must now return to the Nerdery at the Geek Building.

I've had this happen with a super-slow leak.  I didn't know why the tire was flat...so I just filled it up again and went riding.  A few days later...flat again.  So I finally took it off the bike and the leak was so small I had to dunk the tube in water to find it.

be sure to run a rag through your tire and rim to see if/or what debris is causing the puncture.

Bear, I'm surprised that your answer wasn't "Ride More." Isn't that the solution to all bike related problems?

Try a controlled experiment. Ride every day for 2 hours and see if the tires hold air (no refilling 'em before the ride either). If they hold air, you KNOW the solution.

I once caught my cat biting a hole in my bike tire. A quick trip to the cat dentist and that crap came to a screeching halt.

Could be latex tubes instead of rubber ones. I was reading about this a few days ago. It's normal that they lose air slowly.
If I remember well, the benefit was weight...

I had that trouble with some new tubes I had purchased with a long stem. I found that if I took a needle nose and tightned the stem (not the little thing you need to loosen to fill it with air) but where the stem is screwed together I no longer have that problem.

Hope this helps!!!
