Subject: Thoughts on College Football, 2005
1) The BCS got it right, sort of. FSU is still in it, and Notre Dame is overrated (yes I said it, they only played one good team this year and that was USC). We still need a playoff - both USC and Texas played in terrible conferences. I wonder if Penn State, or UGa could beat them? And, if either of those two played in the SEC or the Big Ten, it would have been much harder to go undefeated. I still think they would have, but it leaves room to think...
2) The SEC is the best conference, again. Three teams in the top 10, Five in the top 20. Nobody is faster, hits harder or plays defense like they do in the south. I feel that the Big Ten is has a slight edge in the number two spot over the ACC (mostly because of VTs meltdown, and UMs playing both Duke and Temple in the same year). The Pac-10 takes 4th, with the Big East and the Big 12 in last. Yes, I said last; what pitiful conferences.
3) The most overrated teams this year....Tennessee has to take number one, but UCLA has to be close. No team that is rated in the top 15 should ever give up more than 60 points, unless they also put up 50-60. How can you even be a top 20 team with the 115/117 ranked defense. If UCLA played in any of the top three conferences (as listed above), they would have lost 4. Oregon is likewise overrated.
4) Is Reggie Bush amazing or what?
5) Matt Leinart, by comparison, isn't a heisman candidate this year. Sorry, on a team with that much offensive talent even I could not **** up.
6) UF did NOT have a "disappointing" season. Give me a break, we beat all of our rivals, came within one loss of the SEC title game, AND, no other team can claim this, we beat two of the eight BCS teams.
7) How about Les Miles for coach of the year...Hurricane Katrina, first year as head coach, and they still will finish in the top 10...wow, screw Pete Carrol, I could win with that offense.

And last....
8) My bowl predictions - Rose, UT over USC 27-17
Orange, PSU over FSU
Sugar, UGa over WVU
Fiesta, OSU over ND in a nail biter
Outback, UF over Iowa, big

Your thoughts are welcomed

El Oso all great points, wow can't believe that I am agreeing with you!! Let me add a few thoughts:

1) Mack Brown has to be the biggest idiot in College Football....all the talent that has come and gone through that school and he is just now winning his FIRST conference championship of any kind. Like I have said before no coach does less with more. That being said I am salivating over the USC v UT game...should be a good game, unless Texas goes Oklahoma on us.

2) Second biggest idiot associated with College Football, Kevin Scarbinsky of the Birmingham News. In what is the biggest case of sour grapes ever, this bozo has the audacity to write a column diminishing the the two teams that ACTUALLY PLAYED in the SEC Championship game by saying Auburn was the SEC's best team. Now Auburn is a great team and they were hot as a firecracker at the end of the season, but they didn't get it done on the field so IMO they have no right to say we're the best.

3) Reggie Bush is the most incredible, dynamic player in College Football. The guy had 187 yards rushing in the FIRST QUARTER against UCLA. Just amazing!!

4) Seems to me the formula to win a National Championship these days is to play in a weak conference, schedule a moderately hard game early (so you can recover if you lose), and run up the score when ever possible.

5) Colorado has to be the worst major conference team ever.....

6) Its good to be a DAWG!

Good thoughts.

But I do NOT understand how the #22 ranked team gets to play a #3 ranked team in the Orange Bowl.....big deal, they beat VT.  Makes me sad b/c I realize it's all about the benjamins.

I agree with your predictions too!  It would be really cool to see TX beat USC.  Really, really cool in fact

As you said, it's all about the benjamins... the main six conferences worked themselves a sweetheart deal when this was all set up.

And putting the Big 12 behind the Big East is just laughable... certainly not their best year, but behind the Big East? Yeah right, I barely but the Big East in front of the Mountain West.

each bowl is a "set-up" ie Roise bowl (except when the national BCS game) is #1 in Big 12 and Top 10. (unless they are in a "better bowl.") so you can be ranked 53 and if you are the bet in the big 12, you get to go!

I am sorry, but that is ridiculous. There was a similar sentiment in florida a couple years back when UM went on their 34 game tear. Let me state this as clearly as possible, NO COLLEGE FOOTBALL TEAM CAN BEAT AN NFL TEAM. The Men of Troy do have a potent offense, but their defense would be shredded, even by the Arizona Cardinals.

It's dreaming, but I'd love to see an NCAA/NFL matchup some day. They do it in baseball in the preseason, but with football, there's a real chance some of those kids would get killed, so it'll never happen. It'd still be cool to watch, though.

THats like saying no farm team for MLB could beat the last in the sport, no matter how good. or that the march maddness champions cant beat the last in the NBA. i would beg to differ...

or that the russian oly team cant beat the US pros? which in tern mens the US oly team cant beat them.... 1984!!

I won't quote the previous post since it would take up too much room, but I'll respond.

Yes, it would NEVER happen.  Baseball and hockey are games where freak things can happen far more frequently.  Football is a game where speed and pure physicality rule the game.  The worst NFL team is a collection of All-Stars from the college ranks who've grown accustomed to play a faster, more physical game than college ball.  The NFL defensive line would so overwhelm the offensive line that Superman himself wouldn't go anywhere.  Leinart wouldn't get off a pass that's more than five yards because he wouldn't have time.  The opposite is true on offense.  Rarely would a college pass rusher get near the QB, and when they did, more than likely they'd have to deal with an NFL caliber blocking RB.

It's just not the same game, and the college team would get absolutely pounded.  If USC struggles with Fresno St., do you really think they'd stand a chance against a team 100X better?

And BTW, I love college football far more than the NFL, but you've gotta be realistic about it.

SEC is the best conference this year. So what? Act like you have been good before - The big 10, SEC and big 12 "who's the best" is different every year and will change again. Why is it the SEC fan always must shove this in everyone's face every time they have a good, and especailly a great year? Is this some type of souther inferiority complex?

P.S. and yes, that was me.

Never happen. "You Can't Blame" on ESPN called it right, the College Presidents will never let it happen.

And ND probably deserves their rank, but not an at large bid.

Oh, you gotta love this.  Penn State finally makes it to a BCS game and here come the fans, poo poo'ing the very system that got them there.  Ya'll need to shut your yappers, thank your lucky stars that your season's not over, and bring the "A" game, darlin', cause FSU (might) show up and whip your butts.

In all seriousness, this game is the sentimental favorite, the two winningest coaches in NCAA history!  C'mon, how's that for a draw card?

haha, you guys crack me up.

1. "SEC is the best conference"

Every team in the Pac-Ten looks bad when they have to play against USC.

2. "Notre Dame is overrated"

Sure they are, that's why they almost beat the #1 team in the country, and many people think because of the non-call push, that they got robbed.

3. "UCLA is overrated"

You site the BCS rankings as support for why the SEC is so good, but choose to ignore them when it involves UCLA. Talking out of both sides of your mouth.

4. "Texas will beat USC'

Did you watch any of the games before you opened your mouth? USC will beat the crap out of Texas. While the #4 team in the nation was busy losing to a #13, and while a #5 was losing to an unranked opponent, and a #2 was dropping 70 on an unranked opponent, USC dropped 60 points on a #12. That's the gap between USC and the rest of the country.

5. "Matt Leinart isn't a heisman candidate"

You probably said the same thing about Jason White.
