Love training for the satisfaction. Like racing just because of the atmosphere. Since 99.99% of the races are held early morning, I feel like I am getting something most  of the world doesn't understand.

Much rather race than train.

Is this the end of us, Hollis?

I would much rather train than race. I tend to get too type A and then stress over a key race that is eons away, like what the heck!! Tongue out

I train to race, and I'm quickly becoming a race junkie. It's not that I dislike training, I feel fantastic at the end of a good workout, but I need the races to make me get out and do the training - I'm not good with "working out for the sake of working out". That and I can drink more beer.

I am a trainer, I like training (sometimes love it, sometimes hate it). I do not like racing much although that is changing. I am taking a more informal approach to racing; I do not get as nervous anymore. I hate the last 20 minutes of any race, then I cross the finish line and I love the feeling so much I promise myself to do it again. I love 5K, half marathons and marathons, lots of "normal" people chasing a dream. I do not like triathlon races as much; competitors in general are not as friendlier.

I train to race and train to always be a top-three finisher. I used to think I wouldn't work this hard if I couldn't be competitive, but I have switched my thinking a bit. If I had to give up racing tomorrow I would still train like a racer because I've adopted the tri lifestyle and love it!  No way I want to give back these gains. No way.

Training, yeah I like the training.

Racing, the best thing about racing is the finish line.

Wow! I don't find that at all. In fact, I find the atmosphere and attitude of triathletes much better than runners. Hmmmm? Maybe I'm just more in my element at tri's.

Love both. They're all part of a glorious cycle that are a great means to and end regardless of how well you actually perform.

Training is the journey, racing is the destination.  I couldn't have either one without the other.  I really enjoy all the training and planning...paying my dues is the challenging part.  Racing is the big payoff.  It's when I get to test myself and see what all the blood and sweat has earned me.  I don't need to train nearly as hard if all I want to do is stay fit, and I couldn't race if I didn't do everything possible to prepare myself to perform to the best of my abilities.

trilover - 2005-12-06 10:25 AM There's no other time of feeling "in the moment" other then when your 30 seconds away from the start.

Seconded.  I'd also include the last 30 seconds heading towards the finish line.

As to training vs. racing: When I'm training it's to get to the race. When I'm racing it's to justify to my wife the enormous amount of time and money I've spent

I love training, but racing is what gets my juices flowing. Not that I "race" really, I'm still at the point where "finishing" is the goal. I hope to change that this summer.

I work with a training fanatic. He is in great shape, fast and trains hard. I asked about his race schedule and he only does 2 sprint tri's every summer. He did IMWI two years ago and did very well. He simply told me "I'm just in it for the training". To each his own, I guess. If I looked like that and was that fast, I'd be doing at least one IM every year. (No, cash is not an issue either).

Maybe is my luck I guess triathletes have to take care of a lot of stuff before the race and everyone is minding their own business. Lots of gear geeks... Beginners are really friendly but seasoned athletes have a different attitute I kind of understand why but I still don't like it.
Running? well you go to the corral with people running your same pace. No much gear to brag about LOL

I like beating other people, pushing yourself and knowing that I left nothing. If I could not do well (compared to most) I might not race and definetly would not do all the training. I'm a pretty good swimmer but I would not do it if not for doing a tri. I would however bike. Running I would take less seriously. I would lift more weights and not be concerned about adding 5-10 pounds of muscle.

When I was racing, I did think to myself, why the #@!# would I do this to myself? I can be in great shape without this pain.

It drives me to know that my best times are still in front of me.

I like both.  I love the mental health break of training and the fitness it gives me.  I also love racing and meeting cool tri people.

Training is a vital part of my daily life. It gives me a chance to relax, unwind, and break away from work, the kids, etc. It also has that cool side effect in that it helps you become faster (very relative term). That said, I love racing. You can train anytime, anywhere, but only so many times a year can you go out an compete with your fellow racers, a challanging course, and your personnal limitations. The feeling of anticipation before the start, that inner conflict where you aren't quite sure if you can do it, but are dead set to try, is addictive. To me you can race and come in dead last an still feel a great sense of accomplishment and reach your goals. for me, training just can't match that.

All the way dude!!

I love to train and I love to race, but what I REALLY REALLY love is the feeling accomplishment when all that planning and hard work comes together for a better race time or a longer/harder race finished than the last one.

What I hate is gear.  I hate gear...I hate knowing I shouldn't spend money on what I want (then doing it anyway and kicking myself) AND the fact that I don't know much about it...and I have no real desire to learn.  So I'm spending buttloads of money that I don't have on stuff that  I don't have the motivation to understand well enough to know if I really even need it.  Nuts.
