Subject: Hawaii - need help finding a good place to stay
My family and I may have an opportunity to get to Hawaii the week of Christmas - ie...we have the plane ride available, but are having trouble finding an affordable place to stay.  Anyone here have any recommendations?   There are 7 in my family - myself, my hubby, and my kids ages 20, 19, 16, 10 and 6.    I found some hotels, but we would really love to find a condo so we can stay together.  I know you guys aren't tour guides, but does anyone here know of a good website to go to find some good Hawaii deals?  We would be staying in Oahu.

TIA

condo or house is definitely better than a hotel.

i had really good luck on this site - www.vrbo.com/.

i was just there in september. we (fiance and i) stayed in kailua - i highly suggest staying somewhere *other* than waikiki.

also, we really liked the book "Oahu Revealed". good maps and general tips. don't remember the author, but we bought it at barnes & noble. the cover is blue.

have fun!!!

Yes, I suggest finding a vacation rental in Kailua if you can afford it. Kailua is very provincial and very tourist friendly. You'll like it there. And yes, stay away from Waikiki if at all possible.

Lived there for a little over 2 years, and I also suggest Kailua or Kaneohe Bay area. Less touristy and more affordable. I was in the military so we always had friends and family stay at Hale Koa or on post. Sorry that I am not more help.

We did a trip with extended family last April (there were seven of us) and we rented a house on the "windward" side of the Island. We found a very affordable 4-bedroom house less than a block from Lanikai beach.

This is the site we used to find our house:

I would recommend staying in Kailua or Lanikai. It was a 30 minute drive to Honolulu - close enough to take some day trips into major tourist sites (such as Pearl Harbor). But mostly we just enjoyed the beach and hanging out. Feel free to PM me if you want more info.

I was there on TDY with the military once and I agree stay away from Waikiki, although it is good for a day trip or two.  I wasimpressed with the other side of the island though.  If you do find a good site for condo finding let me know.
