Rode the trainer for the first time last night! I really like it--I mean the convenience of it. I watched the first 30 minutes of Aero Base Builder I. Coach Troy would suggest standing at various points. However, I had some problems standing. Don't know if it's me, the bike, or a combination. I would be in the highest or second highest gear that I could be on my bike, and couldn't get a smooth pedaling stroke. The pedals were really jerky, and I'd get stuck either at the top of the stroke or the bottom. If I reduced the resistance, it was even harder.

So, my question is: is it my lack of muscle strength (I can stand on the spinning bikes no problem, with varying resistance, and go for a while) or is it my bike (yes, it is old, and the gears don't always shift well, but they work) or is it a combination?

Thanks!

Well, it could be a little of both.  If you're not used to standing while peddling then your muscles might not be used to it.  If you're in the wrong gear you might have too little or too much resistance.  You should be pushing a harder gear when standing so you're not trying to hold your weight up with your hands.  Your trainer shoudl also be set so that your tire doesn't jerk when mashing on the downstroke while standing.  Sometimes this is caused by the flywheel being too tight or too loose.  The trainer should be set up so that its feels just like the outdoors.

Keep practicing until it feels right.  Make sure you're keeping your weight over the saddle when your standing.  Don't lean too far forward.

I have the same problem. I think it could also be from pedaling in squares instead of circles. I do the same thing if I do one leg drills (while sitting). One of my goals is to have a better pedaling form.

it could be a combination of the old bike + less-than-perfect pedaling technique. I'd say that doing some light resistance/high cadence work and concentrating on pedaling smoothly would be helpful.

I second that thought.  Have an Aerobase Builder dvd also and the first few times standing up on the bike I was choppy and realized I was pedaling up and down and not in circles.  With some concentration on the effort you will get smoother at it.

HAVE FUN......
