Subject: Water Temps for Wetsuits
What water temperatures are considered wetsuit appropriate? I haven't done an open water swim yet and have been spoiled by 80 degree pool water. I'll be doing the Xterra Sprint in June out in Richmond and have been told the water will be in the 70's. Will I freeze if I don't have a wet suit on?

Check USA triathlon's website I believe they have rules concerning water temperature and the wearing of a wetsuit. You should be alright in 70 degree water without a wetsuit.

My first race is on Sunday, and the lake here in AZ should be 73-74F. My race info says the cutoff for wetsuits is 77. Don't know if it varies, but the above-mentioned website should give that info. I am also used to that bathtubby warm pool. We'll soon find out how cold 74 realllly is! Good luck!

With the USAT standards (if I recall) 77 is not the cutoff time, but it's the point at which they are not recommended, and then individual races make the cutoff times from that. I think the phraseology is 'at their own discretion. This applies to age group only (in other words, us!)

I could have this wrong, it's been a long time since I've looked at it, and I don't have a wetsuit (brrrrr!) although all my tri temps have been in the low 60s.

Someday someone will give one to me for a holiday (b-day, xmas) and i'll be a very happy (and insulated) girl!
