Subject: Trainer: What am I doing wrong?

I did a 90 minute (or so) workout on the trainer on Monday. I brought bike & trainer to the workout, and I am not very savvy about setting it up (D does it for me pretty much always), so I may have set something up not right.

That said, as I was riding, I would notice that as my cadence got higher (or even speed at higher gears), that eventually the "spinny thing" would no longer be in contact with my wheel, and I'd have to get off and readjust.

Question: Why was this happening?

I figure it could be any of the following, but I'm wondering if someone else has encountered this problem.

a) tire was cold from being in my car for over an hour before hand, and as the air inside the tire warmed up, the "spinny thing" lost contact. I'm not sure this is it, because it still did it even after an hour of riding.

b) tire was not properly set in the "vise". Very possible. Is there a rule of thumb when setting this up?

c) "spinny thing" was not in enough contact with the tire to begin with. Again very possible. How do you know what the right contact is? I usually spin my tire, then wind the "spinny thing" up until it makes the tire stop.

Sorry for my "technical" jargon I'll be doing this every week, so I'm going to have to learn how to get it right.

Not sure about what you mechanism you are using, but my trainer stand recommends to turn three full turns once the tire touches the flywheel.

The directions for my mag trainer told me to tighten until it touches the tire, and then tighten another complete 1-2 turns. I usually do 1 1/2. If I tighten it less than this I get some slipping as you described.

Happy winter training

I do 2 1/2 full turns after the tire touches the flywheel.

I'm confused...what kinds of trainers are you all using?  We just got a fluid trainer (merry Christmas to us   )  and it just automatically drops down until the wheel touches..I guess it's a flywheel but the wheel is actually touching a gel roller.
