I'll probably throw out another $20 for predictions again, and this time include splits for the swim, bike and run.

Great...it's only December and I already feel pressure to kick it up a notch or two

I certainly hope to make some significant progress in 2006 but honestly, I'm planning to use the vast majority of my races as experiments and learning opportunities to find my limits and work on pacing.  I'm considering using a June HIM to see just how hard I can push the bike without crapping out on the run.  The idea being to go a bit harder on the bike than I think I should and see what happens after T2.  Worst case is I shift into survival mode, have an unimpressive run, and learn something about myself physically.  Best case is I have a fast bike AND fast run.  I'm going to approach most of my races with one specific concept to test.  By the end of the season I should have a much better idea of where my limits are and be ready to get serious in 2007.

jeng - 2005-12-21 10:03 AM Someone should make this a poll. I'm going to vote for Joel as the one to watch next year. And Rick, maybe I can predict your time. Jen

This is why I'm voting for you. Well that and you post the best race pics.

... another to watch is Daremo (Rick) - he recently ran a sub 4 hr marathon and routinely trains in the 6:xx range.

I really don't think he considers the sub-4 mary to be that great of an accomplishment. Even old, fat me has broken four hours.

No, it is a great accomplishment and something a lot of runners aspire to.

(But you are correct, the result was far from rewarding to me personally. )

There are certainly a ton of people faster on the forum than me, both male and female, but I appreciate the vote of confidence! I'll do my best to train hard and smart and see what sort of times I can put up on race days and back up all my smack talkin'!

You guys and gals realize that 'fast' is relative right ;-) ?

When I started out running at 9:30 a mile in my first triathlon, I thought going 7:00 pace was fast. When I hit 7:00, I thought that was fast. When I walked on at college as that 7:00 per mile guy (hilly x-country course) I thought 5:55/mile was unreal and unreachable. But as you get faster and faster you realize, it's all relative.

In 2005, what do I consider 'fast' for a male 30-39?
A sub 2:05 Olympic Distance race at 22:30 swim/1:00 bike/38:00 run - that is pretty quick for an AGer.

For 1/2 IM its more like 4:30 and for IM its sub 10:00.

That's my take on what's 'fast' - :-)

Hey, Welcome to BT!

Was IMCAN your first IM?  What do you think contributed most to your improvement...better training, harder work, more experience, better race planning (pace/nutrition)?

A few things contributed to my improvement.

Swim time was about the same but because IMCDA is a two loop swim with a dash along the beach my actual time in the water was slightly faster.

On the bike in Penticton I had two flats but only one spare. Lost quite a bit of time waiting for support. Had one flat in CDA so I did lose time but way less.

The real difference was on the run and the principal reason for this was because overall I just raced smarter. Better handled pace and nutrition and it really paid off.

Yeah where are the fast BT chicas? let's hear it!

I'm not fast, I just place well because I'm old. The fast 50 year olds live in Florida, and California, and I don't.
