After 10 years of powerlifting my joints and body hurt. Heavy lifting hurt my elbows, hips and knees. I never ever thought I would be an endurance athlete, but seveal people talked me into training for a 1/2 marathon Jan 05. That started it all and now I am emptying my pockets to buy tri equipment. I plan on completing at least 5-6 races in 06. So my life without triathlon I would not be swimming thats for sure and I would still be running 1/2 marathons and thinking about doing a full marathon. My wife would probably think I was normal b/c now she thinks I am obsessed and going through a mid-life crisis. I guess I could always dump the tri and get a 20 yr old mistress, but that would only end my life sooner than I had planned.

I would be eating more chocolate, but I'm not so sure that's even possible.

I'd still be in martial arts and I'd have a HECK of a lot more spending money.

If it wasn't for triathlons and training for them I'd still be the 307lbs, 49% BF overweight man I met in the mirror one morning 18 months ago.  Whew, I'm glad that episode of life is over!

I'd be wondering "Can I do a triathlon?" And still bored doing the same routine at the gym.

Good thread.

I'd still be trying to squeeze in 1 or 2 Muay Thai workouts a week, a few pounds heavier, a whole lot crankier, and under the delusion that I'm physically incapable of running for more than 20 minutes at a stretch. Hah!

Probably sitting on my butt on the couch a lot more, but also not going through painful episodes of bike envy either...

I'd still be in shape, but not sure what I'd be doing. I can tell you I would NOT be able to swim 100 yds without triathlon.

If I may be philosophical for a second...That's the theme of everyone's posts. Triathlon GOALS have taken many of us outside of our "box"...be that other fitness endeavors, or couch potato status. In most cases, getting out of that box has helped us be more fit, and taught us a thing or 2 about ourselves in the process.

If it wasn't for triathlon.... I would have eaten ALL the choc-chip cookies I baked last night. Instead, I ate a few then brought the rest into the office and my co-workers devoured them by 10:00 am!

With triathlons in my live--I have managed to lose and keep off 80#, I can say my ability to do all things athletic has increased considerably (hiking, swimming, skiing, biking, running, ping pong, etc!), I am happier, I have completed 2 marathons to "fill my time" between races and I have "increased my running ability" for triathlons, I have made great new friends, I lust after bikes and not ice cream (OK, OK, that's a lie), I am busy most mornings and nights, people I grew up with don't recognize me (mostly the weight loss thing), friends have been inspired by some of my accomplishments and have gone on to try other things themselves because of it (again the weightloss thing), I have gotten other friends off the couch and out on the streets running with me, others have signed up to do an Ironman with me, I can say I am not fast but I get the race done--I am not a quiter. I love my life now.

If it wasn't for triathlon I wouldn't be losing weight and feeling better than I have in years. I have not yet participated in a race (that's coming in June) but I am eating healthier and exercising several times a week. Before, I would exercise a few times a YEAR!!

if it wasn't for triathlon, i'd probably STILL hate running.

if it wasn't for triathlon, i'd probably be looking at a kidney transplant due to my diabetes.

if it wasn't for triathlon, i'd proabably have horrible seasonal depression.

I'm relatively certain I would have had a weight-loss backslide by now because the gym for just the gym's sake was getting so incredibly boring....

I wouldn't have believed that it takes 4 significant digits to get to a reasonable basic bike though....

I would still be in the gym tring to bulk up as much as possible and only doing cardio maybe twice a week. Oh and spending my lunch break on other websites.

not that i'm a bad person, i just need a rush and right up until i started training for my first tri i was involved in very bad things. thats all over now and instead i revel in the challenge of training and the infinite joy of racing!

oh yeah and if it weren't for tri i wouldn't have slept with all the tri chicks i have.

I'd be drinking more, be 10 lbs. heavier, be depressed over someone suing me, be vegetating in my house, hibernating from NH's frosty winter, but be more slightly more wealthy (though the gear was worth every penny).  I wouldn't have found a great local tri club and met all the nice, new friends that I've met over the past year.  I'd be eyeing tri mags at Barnes and Noble, wondering if "I could ever do that."

Ditto - That post sums up so much of what is going right in my life right now.
