Here's when it's not okay:

You've been drafting someone for a good portion of the course and haven't done your share of work. As the tape comes into view, you explode out from behind your competitor and take it.

Not cool.

Otherwise - a race is a race. I'd chase down and pass an 8 year old girl if it meant a new PR for me. ;-)

No offense, but I'm not going to feel bad if I raced smarter than you...assuming we're talking a draft-legal situation like running.  There are definitely tactics to racing and if you're going to let me sit on your shoulder and conserve energy then I'm going to take advantage of that.  Your options are to slow the pace and force me to pass or prove you're a stronger runner and drop me.  I've only drafted in a running race a couple of times and they were both a mutual benefit situation where we traded the lead.  If someone were drafting off of me I'd suggest they take a turn at the front.  If they refused you better believe I'd dust them.

Heh - guess you don't come from a road cycling background.

There's a difference between racing smart (i.e., using someone for a draft, then putting a gap on them to break the tape) and sitting on until the very last minute and jumping simply to gain a spot.

Just generally accepted etiquette and personal opinion from a former roadie is all...

Happy racing.

Nope...I've never done any bike racing and I doubt I ever will.  I'm not really a fan of the pack mentality of bike racing...same for ITU races.  But I do underestand your perspective...I just don't think it applies to triathlon.  Although I don't think I would be particularly upset if I wasn't able to win the sprint...for the tape or just a position.  To me it's not really about picking up an additional position, it's about finishing as fast as I can and that just might mean passing someone very near the finish line.  I'd much rather race a TT and rely completely on my own abilities.  Win or lose, I gave it my all and I know exactly how I compare to everyone else.

If you're in a position to pass, pass them, it's not your fault they didn't train as hard as you

Time for me to butt in.

A race is a race is a race. Doesn't matter whether itsa triathlon, a downtown crit, local 5k, or even something different like alpine skiing, speedskating, or go-karting (to think I gave that up for this...). If you don't give it your all you didn't race. Competition of any kind is supposed to be all-out, no-mercy, win-win-win (or attempt).

As well, if you think that other competitors shouldn't pass you insert location here then again it is not a race. A race is from when the gun goes off right until you break the tape. Sure its fine to be a tad peeved that someone took a place from you. One the otherhand, to believe that someone ruined your race because they passed you, I believe that you should not be racing.

In my first (and only to date) tri, I took it as motivation when I was passed. at the beginning of the bike leg, some chick passed me and we battled it out for the whole 10k. She took it back in the run (where my race all but ended). You know what? I finished 36th of 184 for the bike leg, so to bib #917 I thank you.

It is people like that who ruin sports...PERIOD!

my $0.02.

I have had people thank me for trying to pass them at the end!  I'm not speedy, but from time to time I will try to outsprint someone at the end. My first 10k, I followed a woman, not close enough to draft, but close enough to see her for the entire 10k.  I ran with her for a little way but her pace was just a little too fast.  However when we rounded to the corner to the finish, I picked up the pace and passed her.  I apologized, she said she tried to pick it up but couldn't.  We had a good laugh and I sensed no animosity,

The girl who thanked me, was 25, I was 46.  She said she was almost ready to give up and heard me coming up behind her.  She kicked it up and had a great photo finish.  She said I almost made her throw up!! But she was happy.

It's a race, and yes I'm slow, but I have out sprinted someone at the end, down the chute. Believe me, more than not I'm the passee not the passor.
