I am back from a year off from training and I am ready to go!!

I have a 6 month old daughter and we did our first 5K last week.  We had a blast!! So, I started searching for more races on-line.  I found some forums that had negative comments about people running with jogging strollers in races.

I was kind of disappointed to hear that many runners do not like them.  I do not want to interfere or make anyone disgruntled or angry on the day of their race.

Are jogging strollers really a "no no" for races?  I would love to get comments from people who use this site.

Thanks!!  Mollie and Keira

I LOVE to run with my daughter in the jog stroller and have been doing it since she was only 4 months old. I never RACE with her though. If you want to run with a jog stroller enter in a noncompetitive catagory. Most 5K's will have a fun run and a race with the fun run starting 5 to 15 minutes after the real race. If that isn't possible I would position yourself to the back of the pack when you line up to start. I know from my own experiance running with a stroller that it is sometimes hard to manuver in a pack and you could get in the way of someone raceing for a PB.

no way, stuff `em. If people are bothered by you in a race with a stroller it`s probably because they can`t believe how fast you are moving while pushing 100lbs extra and they can`t beat you running on their own. I`ve seen people race in all kinds of 5ks with strollers, some have even beaten me and I can only tip my hat to them. Same goes with people in a wheelchair, good on them for being out there, and an extra good on `em if they beat me and my 2 perfectly good legs. Enjoy your 5k races and don`t give a hoot to what others say, think or do. Unless the rules say no strollers then go enjoy it!!!!

Sure go for it! I say start at the back, just so there won't be issues with people getting tangled in your space. It's no different that running alongside Dick and Ricky Hoyt in a race, as he pushes his son in the wheel chair. I raced him in a 5-miler and he kicked my butt by at least 3 minutes!

Absolutly... I wasn't saying don't take your kids... But it is really important you watch yourself. Especialy at the start where people are packed in tight. I just start near the back and let the crowd thin a bit then work my way through the pack.

If people are really that concerned about a 5k charity run then that is their problem. Just keep your line and let them go around you if they need to. I would recommend that you stay toward the back as you are probably not racing so the importance of being in the front is less. People have the same problems with running with dogs, but I see them at every race I do.

I was spectating at a local 5k last year (Amy was running) and witnessed this jackhole, pushing a baby in a stroller, sprinting his @ss off the last 100 yards. He was weaving in and out of other slower runners and right before the finish, in an effort to get past one last person, he sideswiped a  curb and nearly toppled the stroller. It was like that Jackass episode with the baby on the bike.

I would say if you do that kind of thing, you probably don't need to have a stroller in a race (and you probably have your kids taken away from you).

Also, most races expressly forbid them.

Many of the races in S. Florida specifically state no strollers or baby joggers. When my kids were small I stayed towards the back until the masses cleared and then picked up my speed. It doesn't bother me if there are strollers on the course if they are considerate.

I agree about the walkers though. Why do so many insist on starting near the front?

strollers and dogs - two things that some race directors allow, and some don't. i wouldn't worry about other runners. i would check with the race director. if they say 'yes', then go for it!

autumn - mama w/ more jogging strollers than children
