race during marathon training
OptionResults
Run 7 miles before race.
Run 7 miles after the race.
Reschedule the 20 miler.
Run 7 the day before, 20 mi over 2 days is good enough.
3 mile WU, 4 mile WD and run the race at goal mary pace

I would like to run a half marathon 5 weeks before my marathon.  The weekend the half marathon (race is on Sunday) will be held, I'm scheduled to run a 20 miler.  How should I handle this?

Do you want to RUN the half, or RACE the half? I'm not sure I would race a half 5 weeks out, but running it at your goal marathon pace, with a 3 mile WU and 4 mile WD would be cool.

Good option, Jim.  I was planning on running at PMP (Praying for Marathon Pace) .

Jim's idea seems best, or you can just do a seven-mile warmup then the half mary at marathon pace. This would allow you to enjoy the post-race festivities, rather than having to keep running.

During my last training cycle, I ran a 10K at the end of my twenty-miler three weeks prior to my marathon, then a 5K at the end of my 14-miler the following week, running both races at marathon pace. Gives you a chance to get that good sense of pace as well as to teach your muscles to use glycogen at that pace at the end of a long run. Also gave me a lot of companionship during the latter miles of my  long runs.

I like your term "PMP"- I need to use that more often.  I agree with what Jim said.  I think that running a 1/2 marathon at your marathon goal best is one of the best ways to knock out a long training run.  At least you won't get bored running by yourself since it's a race

I like that idea. Just try to time it nicely so that you are running to the start and then have the gun go off within a few minutes of getting there.

The 20 milers are as much a psychological test as they are a physical test so you definitely don't want to skimp on it or break it into two completely separate runs.

I certainly would not shoot for a 1/2 mary. PR that close to your taper!

I vote to reschedule the 20 miler.

Is that 20 miler your longest and/or last long run before tapering for the marathon? Assuming that your marathon will transition into your triathlon training why not schedule a ~3 hour Z1/Z2 ride the day before the 1/2 and then run it at goal marathon pace? Of course you've got to be doing some riding up to this point. You'd also need to make sure to gt at least one continuous long run in though. I'd prefer to skip my long run that week and race the 1/2 a bit faster that mary pace as a tempo run. Or run the first ~6 miles at marathon pace and then ramp up the speed a bit over the back end. I personally wouldn't see the use in spending the cash on a 1/2 mary race if I'm just going to make it another regular training run. I'm planning a 1/2 mary 5 weeks out from Boston and I'll replace my long run that week with a moderately hard 1/2, then go long again 7-10 days later, and then taper. I tend to taper faster then most however...2-3 weeks is plenty for me. Just thinking out loud here...I guess it really depends on how well you know your body and how it responds to long/hard sessions and how fast you recover.

I vote for running the 7 miles before the race.  I've tried to split a run before a race and found that doesn't work well.  When I'm done with the race I like to chat with people, get food and next thing I know I'm not running the rest of the workout.  Also if you run the 7 miles before the race you will go into the race a little tired and hopefully won't be as inclinded to race the race.
