I was at the Consumer Electronics Show last week and stopped by Garmin's booth to check out the Forerunner 305. It was fastened to the display case and could not be turned on, so I did not get an idea for how the display looks on its smaller screen.

I can say that the form factor looked really nice. The Garmin rep said that the biggest improvement was with the improved GPS attenna and receiver that they were using. He said that it should eliminate most of the problems people have with running between large buildings and under trees. He said that they had been testing it in underground parking garages and it had been receiving signals just fine.

Keeping an eye on this one as a potential purchase.

I hate it when cool stuff like this comes out. My wallet starts jumping out of my pocket. Can't wait to see these hit the street!

The 305 (but not the 205) will even work with their wireless cadence sensor.

Wow - that just sold me on the purchase! Here I was going to be happy with a cheap, basic HRM, but I think I'll have to upgrade my old Timex GPS (the watch died, anyway) and have both in one nice unit. Between this and a wetsuit, I'm going to be shelling out the money in the next few months. This sport is expensive!

that's awesome

Could you get any idea for how it would fit? I have skinny arms and I can just imagine having the antenna wrap around instead of run parallel would make it rather uncomfortable.

I think I like the 201/301 form factor better. This may be because I like it on my upper arm. Here is a pic of it in comparison with a Nike HRM:

Here is the blog entry where pic came from.

Do you think it's to big to wear as your normal watch?

depends, how big of a dork are you?

I still can't tell if it would be too wide for my wrist. It seems like the antenna at the bottom would stick out funny

My buddies call my 301 a "laptop" so they may call my 305 a "PDA"???

I prefer an analog watch for normal use, so I don't consider wearing any training watch for anything but training.
