10 beats higher? no wonder its high when i'm pushing the DOUBLE jogger with 60+ lbs of kids, gear, etc.

from here: http://health.msn.com/fitness/

The 30-minute fix: Take a stroller. Buy a jogging stroller and put a kid in it. Congratulations—you now have an exercise device that helps burn more calories than running. Texas A&M University researchers studied a group of people running at the same intensity for 30 minutes with and without a stroller. When the group ran while pushing a stroller (which held a 25-pound weight plate), their heart rates were 10 beats per minute higher than when they ran stroller-free. "The father can remain (or become) active and at the same time spend time with his child," says John Smith, Ph.D., lead author of the study.

WOW!!! I bet that is why I had that breakthrough run a few weeks ago! I normally push the jog stroller but left the baby (she is 23 lbs) home one day and ran over 1 minute per mile faster than my previous PB! Looks like I need to keep on pushin!

no kidding! i get so used to running with them, and then when i run on my own i'm always surprised by how much easier it is. still, i'll keep running with them as long as they'll put up with it. we almost always run up to an area lake, so they get to see ducks, birds, dogs, all sorts of people, trains (we run under a train track twice), etc. my older daughter will actually nap in the jogging stroller sometimes, which rarely happens otherwise. i have the feeling that one of these days she's going to want to run along side me instead.

I have found a 15bpm difference when pushing the "jogger of pain"!  I almost always am pushing the double jogger and the 80+ lbs really give a full body workout. Just the core strength alone adds extra effort.  Mine pulls to the right, so I am constantly having to correct and compensate for that with my arms and abs.

Good for you for training every run that way!  It'll sure make the races feel easier!

Interesting article, I also train with a double stroller at the local park path (what an adventure!) even the smaller hills are brutal. It feels much easier when running without it-I have noticed a 1min/mile difference. It is also a great way to train and spend time with my daughters, when we finish they get to play at the big playground.

As great a workout as you get pushing the jogging stroller, just this weekend I passed mine on to my SIL who has a 1-yr-old and WOW is it a good feeling to think I'll never have to push that thing again. Now I just train the sprog to run farther and faster with me.

I've inline skated with mine before, it's not as hard as it seems if you know how to skate.  I've been skating for 20+ years.  When my kids were tiny (3 & 5 now) I would skate with them in the little chest carrier thingy.  I loved it and so did they.

We sold our jogging stroller and now we have another due in April so I guess I'll have to buy another one and actually use it for jogging this time.  This info is good to know so I know what to expect when I start using it this summer.

I spent about half of the summer Sat mornings jogging with my 1 1/2 year old in a jogging stroller and my 5 yr old riding his bike (the other half were spent cycling with both in a trailer). My HR was a bit higher, but my pace was to in order to keep up with my son. I always thought, effort wise, it was about the same.

Now for those cycling days when I was pulling them in the trailer ...

You know I was just thinking about the bike trailer myself... That REALLY hurs more than the jog stroller... Imagine strapping a 35LB weight to your bike and doing a hill workout!

what kind of stroller do you have? you might be able to fix the tracking. my b.o.b. tracked great right out of the box, but the new single stroller took about a week to get on track (pun intended). nothing more annoying than having to readjust every 6 paces!

how about 100? the burley weighs itself weighs about 30. ella was around 40 lbs last summer and fiona was about 25 or 30. plus water bottles for both of them, extra water for me, snacks, blanket, etc.

how do you all keep your kids entertained?? i have a 3 year old and an 8 month old. the little one is great, she can go anywhere - but the 3 year old is beginning to get BORED. she'll last maybe a half hour or so (as long as we're ending up at a park, ofcourse!) but she's pretty restless. she loves the bike trailor - so maybe if i would just put on my cape and run as fast as i can pedal........

I run or bike with a friend who has a daughter that's 4.  We put my 3 yr old and her daughter together in a burly and then the baby by herself.  We do the same when jogging. We take turns with who gets to haul the heavy load...about 110lbs.

As for the 3 year old alone, buy a portable CD player and put in her favorite CD and bring snacks.  Or, tie a helium balloon to her wrist or the stroller.  It tends to drive me crazy, but she loves to bop it around.  I have another friend who resorts to "suckers" but I don't give my kids candy, so I haven't gotten there yet.

I got my son into cheering me on while I ran, which worked great until he developed the habit of (I have mentioned this elsewhere on the board) leaning out of the stroller when I passed someone and shouting: "LOSER! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSER!"

It was about that time I decided he was big enough to ditch the stroller. Sheesh.

in the burley and the jogging stroller, we keep small versions of the magna-doodle. we also do counting games - how many dogs can we spot? how many other runners? how many people on bikes? how many birds/ducks? one of our favorite runs is an out and back/loop combination that takes us over one set of train tracks, under another (through a cool tunnel), around a lake, and then back again. there's a lot to see, so the girls usually don't get bored. often, one or both of them will nap.

that said, i do bring bribes (usually fruit leather and dum-dums) for the hard days. now that i have a nano, i am thinking about rigging up my old rio to a pair of small portable speakers, and filling the rio w/ some of their favorite stories. ella is also reading now, so by summer she may be able to entertain herself with a book.

my kids are also unusually patient with slower forms of travel. jogging stroller, burley, walking, riding the city bus. i don't drive, so they have gotten used to the patterns of non-car travel. they know they have to pay attention to car traffic, and be patient, keep their helmets on (when in the burley), and to be kind to each other (this doesn't always happen).

My nephew would have nothing to do with the baby stroller as an infant but now, at three, he enjoys it and yells, "Faster, faster." I try to stay off pavement because of bad knees and he seems to enjoy the bumpy ride.  If plugged into a book on tape he will go for quite a while.
