Subject: Audio books?
I just bought a portable MP3 player and thought giving audio books a shot during the long weekend training sessions. Anyone have any experience with doing that? Where do you get your audio books?

I would think that during high-intensity work-outs listening to anything requiring comprehension is going to be impossible. On the long base runs, on the other hand, I expect to have enough blood flow to keep my brain following the story.

I am looking hard at http://www.audible.com. The upside is that titles are already encoded and are generally cheaper than CDs, but my MP3 player may not support by audible.com encrypted file format. The manufacturer claims to support audible.com, but the player is not on their list. Any other places to get audio books?

I like them for the long drives, I've never been able to get into them in the long workouts.  It's worth a shot though.  I would think that thrillers/suspense would be better at keeping you engaged while working out.

I know there's a number of folk on here who swear by it though so you should have a plenty of recommendations...

MTBonker,

I am a huge fan of audiobooks. It is what started me reading again. I think they are great for workouts as long as you can pay attention.

I am also a long time member of audible.com Audiobooks can be very pricey if purchased from itunes (i have purchased the harry potter series from itunes since it was exclusive to there) and also pricey if you buy the CD version to rip to your computer. So my advice is audible.com two thumbs WAY up. Also if you get an ipod, you can play the audiobooks faster or slower without changing the voice. (I can't stand 95% of audiobook reader speed. They always read too slow).

Hope that helps!

P.S. I would try audible, you get your first two books for free. That way if your mp3 player doesn't work with it nothing lost and you can always burn the books to CD.

I buy my books at iTunes also. I've listened to Harry Potter on my bike rides and easier and funny books are fun during a workout. You can download stand up comedy also, that is really fun.

I also love the audiobooks. If you are unsure if stuff from audible is going to work on your mp3 player get something really cheap to give it a try. I think they have some short radio shows on their site for about $3.00. Get one of those and give it a try. If it doesn't work you've lost $3.00 and if it does you get to enter the wonderful world of working out with audio books

I've been a member for a year now and can't say enough great things about the service. Simplyaudiobooks is the Netflix of audiobooks but they have both download and CD options. Check out the site for more info on the plans.

How about the library? Our local stocks audio books, you'd just need to transfer them to an mp3 player, that way you could test first whether you actually have the concentration.
