I have this debate with people regularly. That carbonated, sugar filled beverage that comes in bottles and cans.

What is the generic name for it?

I call it coke too. I can't stand to hear it called pop or soda pop. Makes me think we're back in the 1950's

I had never heard it referred to as anything except coke until I went to college in Ohio. It still makes me laugh when someone calls it pop or soda.

Everything's COKE!

My in-laws, from WV, drink Pepsi and call it Coke.  It's soda to me, though.

I was born in Texas (Coke), then moved to Minnesota (Pop), and have spent the last 7 years in DC (soda). It's not unheard of for me to utter the phrase:

"hey, y'all, grab me a soda, eh?"

I'm a conflicted individual.

I don't get it.  Isn't Coke is a brand name?  Are people saying they call all carbonated beverages Coke in some parts of the country?

yes, but is it:

Chapstick or lipbalm
Vice-grips or locking pliers
Cresent wrench or adjustable wrench
xerox or photo copy
postit or sticky note
Scotch tape or clear tape
Speedo or tiny bathing suit

so yes, generic name for sprite, pepsi, Mt Dew, Dr Pepper, ect is Coke.

ASSUMING you prefer a carbonated beverage OTHER than Coke (the Real thang):

In parts of the country where you call these beverages COKE, when you go to a dining establishment, and ask for COKE, can the waitstaff read your mind and bring you a rootbeer, sprite, DP, ....... ?????

If NOT, then I assume you have to SAY the other brand/flavor.

THEREFORE, you do not call every carbonated beverage COKE.

Edit:  Oooops Courtney beat me to the point.

no but when you go into a diner do you order a soda or a pop? No, because she is asking what specific beverage you want. If you are out running errands and get thirsty, you say lets go to McDonalds for a Coke. Meaning lets go get a "soft drink." You could also go to the Coke machine and buy whichever type you prefer.

I think you're missing the point - you claim that Coke is generic, just as all those you pointed out earlier:

Chapstick or lipbalm
Vice-grips or locking pliers
Cresent wrench or adjustable wrench
xerox or photo copy
postit or sticky note
Scotch tape or clear tape
Speedo or tiny bathing suit

(BTW you forgot Kleenex vs tissue)

You then state:
so yes, generic name for sprite, pepsi, Mt Dew, Dr Pepper, ect is Coke.

NO it isn't. If you ask for a Kleenex, Post-it, xerox, vice-grips, etc,  you will get what you want.  If you ask for a coke, you may not - its NOT generic.

not at all.

I have asked for a kleenex many times and have been handed just a normal facial tissue. Definatly the same with a Cresent Wrench and postit note. So Coke is a brand name, but it serves as the generic form. It canbe used both as a generic and a specific. When in the generic form (lets grab a coke, where's a coke machine, ect....) you aren't refering to a specific product, just the generic. When you get there you decide what type of Coke you want and you order accordingly. Again, when asking for it specificly, you wouldn't order a soda or a cola (literacola?) or a pop, as the waitress would then have to dope slap you and ask what kind.
