vortmax - 2006-01-16 3:33 PM not at all. I have asked for a kleenex many times and have been handed just a normal facial tissue. Definatly the same with a Cresent Wrench and postit note.

Ummmm that was MY point.   I'm not sure what your "not at all" comment is referring to.

All I'm sayin (and this is the LAST time I'm sayin it) is:

You want a tissue - if you ask for a Kleenex, you get it.

You want a sticky note - ask for a Post-It, you get it.

You want adjustable pliers - ask for Channel Locks, you get em.

You want a Mountain Dew - ask for a Coke and you WON'T get a MT DEW.

It ain't rocket science.  I wash my hands of this thread

Have fun!

okay,

Ask for a Kleenex and you get a tissue. All you really wanted is a tissue in the first place, but you were refering to it as a kleenex. You are using the brand "Kleenex" as a generic form for tissue. The same way you use Pop or soda and I use Coke.

Now, lets do the same thing for Coke:

Holding the same conditions, you would be ordering a pop. The waitress would give you a strange look; the same look I would get if ordering a Coke and really wanting a mountain dew.

So in that situation you wouldn't be using the generic terms for the item anyway, regardless what you call it.

I thought only the black carbonated drink that was made with the ingredients containing  sugar, caramel, caffeine, phosphoric acid, coca leaf and kola nut extract (hence Coca Cola), lime extract, flavoring mixture etc, etc., can be called "coke"?  Then the "kleenex" phenomenon applies to Pepsi and Dr. Pepper.  But root beer is not coke.

Lara - 2006-01-16 4:16 PM ask for a coke at some resturaunts you get.. "is Pepsi OK?"..  at which point your response should be, "YUCK...  I'll have Iced Tea please."

I've done that before... same exact words without the "yuck"

hahaha. Well I gave up all forms of Coke about 8 months ago, so it's always Iced tea or water.

My mom, on the other hand, has been known to get up and leave a resturaunt if the waitress tells her it's a pepsi place

This is so strange - I knew about pop and soda and even tonic but I had never heard of anyone calling all soda Coke! I guess I need to get out and travel more.

The next question will have to be is it a sub, a hoagie, a grinder....

I am from Ontario and I moved to Florida for a year and would often ask for an Iced Tea.. and my American friends would smile and correct me by telling the waitress that what I really wanted was a Sweet Tea.. and btw its pop.
